[Someone knows, and I have no way of knowing exactly how much.]
[Dexter walks slowly along the exterior walkway, slouching a little with his hands in the pockets of his beige pants. He is his usual disgruntled looking self, mostly because he's caught up in his thoughts.]
[The files are cryptic so I'm safe from the other passengers discovering my

Oh, an unfamiliar face. Well, it's not like he's met many of the people on this ship, so he hadn't really expected to run into someone he knew.]
Good evening.

[Dexter immediately changes his expression.]
Hello.

It's not as if he's having any luck with finding out what happened to Torn...
He keeps a neutral, polite tone for now.]
What brings you out at this time of night?

I am Jared. I just was looking for someone.

[He leans foreward a tad and extends a hand.]
Dexter; Dexter Morgan.

[He clasps Dexter's hand.]
Well met, Dexter.

You analyze blood splatter to determine points of origin, the type of weapons used, methods or modus operandi, and other things in order to scientifically aide in the solving of crimes. A lot of the time, it's the key element in figuring out the sequence of events, and acts as irrefutable evidence in catching and prosecuting the culprits.

Examining the blood splatters on a battlefield would have been pointless and absurd, but in a murder or some such...?]
How can blood tell you that much?

[Dexter's smile is only partially fake now, maintaining eye contact as he speaks;]
It's all simple physics, really. By looking at the different patterns that blood makes - like with passive drops, you can tell if something was moviing slowly with blood coming off of it, like dripping off of a knife - or if blood pools, you can tell if someone was bleeding in a stationary position for a long time.
[He fixes his stance.]
There's also projected bloodstains that can tell you where both subjects were, the type of weapon, and the direction the weapon was moving as it came off of the target - just by looking at the angle of impact in the arcs it formed and direction they travelled...
[He smiles. Blood is his life.]
...If you just stop to look at it, blood can tell you a lot.
