Bumbershoot 2008 - Day 3
Weather is always a concern at Bumbershoot... or at least it should be. It's an outdoor event scheduled on the same weekend every year, afterall. Still, I can't remember ever being at Bumbershoot when it was less than perfect weather. Maybe it's happened.... it must have... but I don't recall it.
This year, I gotta tell you... I was nervous. I checked the 5-day forecast early in the week: it said rain on Saturday! I checked it again the next day: Sun on Saturday, but maybe Rain on Sunday!
This is when I remembered I don't trust 5-Day forecasts. I decided to wing it, that the weather would do what it would do.
What it did was rain on Friday, then threaten in the mornings with dark clouds that cleared up... completely... on all three days. The weather simply could not have been better.
So anyway....
When I got to The Seattle Center I dropped by Bill Stidham's booth to say hello. We talked some more about his art and I told him I'd save him a spot at the Old 97's if he could make it.
The Rockstar Energy Drink Vert Ramp caught my eye... the guys getting crazy air... so I decided to go ever there and watch them. The "Rockstar Girls" (i.e. hot chicks in super-short skirts and low-cut t-shirts) were tossing out shirts and hats to the crowd while we watched the international super-stars of skateboarding (and one BMX guy) take turns doing awesome tricks.
I had some time to kill, so I watched Choklate. She was good. Great band backing her up. She commented on the lack of sun, and one song later it broke through the clouds. The Magic of Bumbershoot.
Then it was time to go over the the North Comedy Stage to see Jessi Klein, T.J. Miller, and Nick Thune, all of whom were hilarious. Added note: the warm-up guy started off his set by coming over to me and saying (and I quote): "I like you... don't know why... maybe its the beard." He tried to be funny, but he wasn't, really.
I grabbed some food and watch Bedouin Soundclash, who have a really great sound... something like if The Clash and The Police were one band. Translation: worth seeing if you get a chance. I'm definitely curious what their album sounds like.
X Levitation Cult was playing when I got the to Mural stage. Totally forgettable. Seriously. The only thing I really remember is that I thought about leaving, but then I remembered that I was waiting for...
The Old 97's! They rocked. If you have to ask what the show was like you owe it to yourself to see them in person. They played between 1/3 and 1/2 new stuff from the album I hadn't listened to at the time (and have yet to form an opinion on), and the rest was all classics.
I met a friend for dinner at Zeek's Pizza, then drove home with my soul rejuvenated for another year. Mission Accomplished.
