Summary: Lee Sungmin is a trained hitman by the codename ‘MIN’. His only sole purpose is to kill his assignments regardless of their backgrounds. So why did, one fateful night, on the brink of death, he met Cho Kyuhyun? The one who taught him the meaning of life. But then why life, had to be so full of twisted humour?
The fine hairs on his neck prickled with the warm breath that smelt of cigarettes. Even knowing that this was just a psychological attack to provoke a reaction from Sungmin, he couldn’t help but feel an overwhelming fear for Kyuhyun’s safety whose life may depend on the very answers he will supply the Interrogator. “Priest can be witness. He’s been following me for days during my stay with Cho Kyuhyun.”
There was a slight pause. Realizing that this is a chance to make sure that the Headquarters do not take action against Kyuhyun, he continued to persuade the Interrogator by saying, “I have nothing to hide. My loyalty will always remain with the Headquarters.”
As if satisfied with Sungmin’s answer, the Interrogator gave a small nod and returned to his seat, grabbing another pen from his front pocket and jotting down Sungmin’s answers. The uneasy silence went on for several minutes before the Interrogator looked up and continued, “How did you get injured?”
Now that was a question to ponder. Why on earth did he get injured? All he could remember was that he had been attacked by someone. “I don’t know.”
“Stop giving me crap!” The Interrogator glared.
And Sungmin glared back, angry that his truthfulness was doubted. “After I finished my assignment and was on the way back to the Headquarters, I was attacked by a shadow.”
The Interrogator’s eyes narrowed into snake-like slits, probably delighting at the fact that he will soon wring out the truth from Sungmin by using unorthodox ways. But his curiosity was piqued. There was no way that a shadow could attack people. “Shadow?”
“Yes. Of a man. Hidden in the darkness from my line of sight and the only thing I could see was his shadow.”
“Continue.”
“Without warning, he starting shooting at me. Caught offguard, one bullet managed to hit my shoulder and I was thrown back onto the wall from the sudden impact.” Sungmin clutched at his wounded shoulder for effect, his eyes looking straight at the wall. “All I can say that this man knows what he is doing very well and I was of no match to him. Even though I retaliated with all I’ve got, he managed to hit me with another bullet on my abdomen and therefore managing to immobilize me.”
The Interrogator’s brows furrowed as he scratched the fine whiskers on his chin, deep in thought. “You’re actually saying this man bested you?”
“Yes, sir.”
“You sure you didn’t see his face? Think hard. Think of the man who injured you.”
Now, it was Sungmin’s turn to be annoye. It never struck his mind why his attacker had wanted to attack him. What he’d remembered, he had said it all. He began to search his mind for some sort of clue that might lead him to remember anything related to his attack. “He had deep predatory eyes and thick brows that, I don’t know... seemed threatening? Straight nose and slightly thin lips... his body,” He thought harder but the image was still slightly blur, “muscular and a little stout. But something seemed strange.”
“Elaborate.”
“He didn’t aim to kill.” Now that he did think back, the event that occurred seemed strange and mind-boggling. “There was another man.” His head began to throb with dizziness. There was something really wrong going on here but he just couldn’t pinpoint it. “He called out and my attacker stopped, allowing me to escape.”
Suddenly, the door clicked open and the Interrogator straightened up, his hand moving immediately to the gun holster behind him, readying to attack the intruder. A dark head popped out from behind the door. “You better have a good excuse to interrupt my session with Min, Priest.”
Siwon bowed slightly in respect, noticing that the Interrogator hadn’t relaxed his hand from his gun yet. Ignoring the tense atmosphere biting into his skin, Siwon said, “Min is to come with me right now.”
“On whose orders?”
“Sir’s.” Delighting the fact that the Interrogator’s expressionless face had changed into one of fear and awe at the mention of the name ‘Sir’, Siwon continued, “And I mean immediately.” Handing in the papers, which Sungmin presumed only to be authorization papers from Sir himself, the Interrogator nodded absentmindedly, as a sign of Sungmin’s ‘release’. The only person who can step in whilst the Interrogator was in the process of exposing his intended target’s secrets was Sir and nobody else.
But as Sungmin was about to breathe in a sigh of relief at the narrow escape, the Interrogator’s voice rang eerily behind him, “Don’t think this is over, Min. We’re far from done.” With that impending warning, Siwon closed the door with a soft click and led a very pale Sungmin away.
***END OF FLASHBACK***
That had occurred before Siwon and he had left for his assignment. That big Latin gorilla. He shuddered to think that over that short period of time when he was missing in action, his skills had deteriorated so much and that he couldn’t handle such a simple task. It was had been disastrous if he had really failed. Because it would’ve meant that he was useless and would’ve been disposed of. And he could never allow that to happen. Not when Kyuhyun’s life is on the line.
As he stared blankly at the spotless ceiling, his mind in a tumultuous mess, there was a small knock on his door. He knew who it was and chose to Siwon who had daringly invited himself into Sungmin’s small room, his stoic and muscular built dominating the almost empty room save for a table, chair, cupboard and the bed Sungmin was lying on.
“Sungmin-sshi.” Siwon called. And when Sungmin continued to stare blankly at the ceiling, blatantly blocking out Siwon’s presence in his room, Siwon’s foot began to tap impatiently on the floor, a sign that he was getting irritated from Sungmin’s indifference. If there was one thing Siwon hated was that Sungmin did not pay any attention to him. He wanted the older man to look at him and only him without a care for the world. “Sungmin.”
“You’re forgetting your place again, Siwon.” Sungmin said, his eyes averting to where Siwon was without making a move to get up from his comfortable position. “I’m still your hyung.”
Siwon chuckled, obviously happy that Sungmin had begun to pay attention to him. “Forgive me.” Dragging the wooden chair to Sungmin’s bedside, he sat down and leant back heavily, observing the delicate face. “I didn’t like the fact that you were ignoring me.”
“You were always a precocious child. Annoying me to no ends with your childish antics.” Sungmin slowly got up, dragging his sluggish body up into a sitting position. He didn’t like it when Siwon towered him even though he was sitting down. He preferred to have equal eye contact. “What do you want?”
“Sir wants to talk to you.”
“Regarding what?”
“Another assignment.”
Blinking confusedly, Sungmin said, “I just finished one and,” he pointed to his new and old bandaged injuries, “I’m still recuperating.”
“That has never stopped you before.” Siwon grinned as his eyes roved hungrily over Sungmin’s nearly naked torso which was nearly covered with bandages and the black pants that hung low on the slender hips. “Besides, this is Sir we’re talking about.”
Growling, Sungmin swung his legs onto the floor. It was never good news when it was Sir himself who personally wanted things done because it meant that the assignment would be one almost impossible to be done. There is absolutely no failure in here. Only death. Is Sir going to punish me for insubordination? Sungmin thought as he made his way with heavy steps towards his cupboard, sidestepping Siwon who eyed him with interest. “Any idea who the next target is?” Sungmin asked as he slipped his right arm into his sleeve, wincing slightly as the action caused him pain.
Siwon shook his head and quickly got up to help Sungmin get dressed, in which Sungmin docilely allowed him to do so, as if it was the most natural thing to do. “I will go to the medical station to get more powerful painkillers.”
“No need. What I have will do.” He poured himself a glass of water and popped two tablets of painkillers into his mouth before swallowing them with a loud gulp of water. “A little pain won’t kill me.”
“Yes, it won’t. But it will slow you down.” Brushing the long bangs away from Sungmin’s eyes, Siwon couldn’t help but be attracted to the endless pools of mesmerizing dark eyes. It was those eyes that captured his sinful soul in the first place. “Sungmin...”
This action reminded him too much of how Kyuhyun used to do that. Jerking his head away as if something scalded him, Sungmin scowled at Siwon. “You’re forgetting your manners again, Siwon.”
As he turned to leave, Siwon’s hand suddenly shot out and grabbed hold of his upper arm before slamming him against the wall, effectively pinning Sungmin’s smaller stature to it. The abrupt movement caught him offguard and for a moment, he felt the breath whooshed out of him. Quickly regaining his composure, his right arm swung arm to punch Siwon but Siwon reacted quick and caught hold of Sungmin’s wrist before pinning it above his head. “What the- LET GO!!” He screamed, his heart pounding hard within his ribcage fuelled by adrenaline.
