Sorry if this is annoying but I'm going to respond to your post in the scientists community here so you'll see it...

In repsonse to:
"This would be IDEAL!!

I mean to get a PhD here .. but I'm not finding it so easy to get a scholorship. I only got a 2.1 for honours and I dont yet have any publications .. so i'm not in good step for an APA.
My supervisors all are in agreement. Do it here, but not without a scholorship. If i can manage to find someone that's asked for a PhD student as part of their grant then that would be awesome. Or a research institute that would be keen to collaborate."

The head of our lab is looking for a student to work on Dengue virus.
If you're at all interested in viruses it would be perfect for you (and from what I've seen, you'd be perfect for it).

It's an ARC funded project (ie. there's money for it and just it) that's industry linked (with a company called Biotron).
There's an associated APAI (industry linked scholarship available only for that project) that's $25627/year tax free (ie. about $5k more than a normal APA).
The project is for developing antivirals against Dengue virus.

The supervisor wants someone who isn't straight out of uni but has some work experience and isn't immature (he's had issues with childishness of students in the past) and because the scholarship is only open to Australian citizens he hasn't actually been able to find anyone since most of the applications he got were from overseas students.

Anyway, I'm quite serious about this... hence going out of my way to post it to you here. If you want to contact the supervisor about it email: suresh.mahalingham@canberra.edu.au or if you want to ask me more questions feel free to email me at: ickismeow@hotmail.com

Good luck with everything, sounds like you had an awesome trip! I'm so jealous!

Hi there, :-)

Sorry, my sister has monopolosed the computer at home since she's in the middle of exams and assignments .. and they've barred chat room sites and dating site etc at work .. so .. sorry for being so delayed ..

ANYWAY!!

Hey the project sounds great.
I'm not immaute and i'm very hardworking :-)
I will email Suresh (do you watch heroes at all? :-) it's a good sign :-D) .. anyway, of course i've been emailing my former supervisors and other at my old universities .. so .. so I don't look like a complete tool in fron t of your boss and you, i'll wait til Tuesday .. that's when I should have a few answers ..

what is Canberra like?
Is it expensive to rent and live etc?
I live in Sydney .. and it's nice here.
I live with my parents so I don't pay board :-)
I have a car.

Also, the project, is it broad or specific? But that I mean is it ubiquitous to ALL viruses ..
My former supervisor used to work on Hep C and gastro and cytomeglo .. so i'm going to ask him and see what he says.

Hey I really appreciate your interest in my cause.
You're great. I hope the good karma comes back to you.

So anyway, i'll let you know as soon as I figure out what to do.
Unfortunately it's not as easy as saying yes :-/

But thanks again.
You'll get an email from me which is
youfoundzen@hotmail.com
thanks again!!

also, is the supervisor good?
DOes he or she offer good support? Are they on time for weekly meetings or area they always "busy" and their students area pretty low on the priority list?
Is it a big lab? Are there people that you can bug when things go wrong?
it's science .. things ALWAYS go wrong. Nothing is ever easy, ans as soon as you make the assumption that something is going to work .. no matter HOW easy it is.. or how many times you've done it .. if you are not still 4 years laters expecting the worst, chance are .. it f**ks up .. 100% of the time.

why am I putting myself through this remind me again? :-)
