I didn't get to do this story for
5_4_3_2 's challenge, because I joined the community late. However, here is a snippet of fic that has been floating through my noggin.
"What the hell are you talking about?" Sam frowned at her sister. Melanie was throwing clothes into her green and pink travelling case, sniffling and sobbing. Sam had never seen her sister this distraught. Despite her perfection, she had the Tough Girl Puckett streak that ran through the family.
"You don't know what I mean, Sam?" Mel wheeled on her, "I find that hard to believe. You were the one who stayed here with her while I went off to school. You're the one who knows how to wake her up, how to get her sober, which show she want syou to tape for her...You're her favourite Sam! She prefers to me!"
"Oh quit your crap, Mel! She boasts about you all the damn time till I think my ears are gonna bleed! You're the good twin, the perfect twin, the one who never gets in trouble..."
"The one who reminds her of Dad?" Melanie asked. Sam went silent. It was an angle she herself hadn't explored.
"Samantha, Mom likes you because you're more like her. You're rough around the edges, you kick down any obstacle in your way, even if it's the police!" Melanie gave a sarcastic laugh and shook her head, "But me? I'm just the kid who gets the good grades and acts all nice...and leaves. Just like Dad."
"C'mon, Mel, Dad was married!" said Sam, "What do you want him to do? Leave his family and come back to mom?"
If he loved her, he would. But he doesn't So there," Mel zipped up her bags, smoothed the rumpled sheets when she took the luggage off the bed, gripped it tight by the handle and turned to her sister, "Take care of mom, okay?"
"It's all I ever frickin' do, Melanie," Sam growled.
"I know," Melanie sniffled, "And we all love you for it, sis. You're what keeps her sane," she flung an arm around her younger sister and gripped her tight. For once, Sam didn't protest, "I'll see you when I get back from school, okay?"
"Okay," Sam mumbled. It was a rare moment. Neither sister ever showed this much affection toward each other. Too soon it was over, and Melanie went through the door.
Sam stood in her sister's room, heaving a sigh. She had never blamed her difference from her sister on her parents ever. Neither had she even given half a thought to Melanie having a negative relationship with their mother. She always thought airy clouds were the only thing that occupied her optimistic brain.
There was so much she didn't know about her own twin.
