The arrival of three teenagers in their bathing suits and lathered in sun screen didn’t go unnoticed in the police station. Carly tried her best not to feel self conscious that a room full of police officers was seeing her in a blue bikini top and tiny white shorts. Sam pulled at the hem of the short yellow sun dress she wore over her tankini. Freddie reached inside the communal beach bag on Carly’s shoulder for his red t shirt and put it on.
“Right this way,” said Officer Spencer, leading them to an interrogation room, “Frances will be able to help us, but she’s busy at the moment.
Carly, Sam and Freddie assumed that he meant a pleasantly plump lady who was at a nearby desk, huddled over her computer, her brown eyes squinting at the screen in concentration.
When they were seated, and Officer Spencer had found refreshment for them (cookies for everybody, lemonade for Carly and Freddie, coffee for Sam) they got down to business.
“So,” Officer Spencer tarted, “I think my partner may have the wrong impression of what happened.”
“He sure does,” said Sam. She saw that the lemonade and cookies were calming her friends down considerably.
“They’re not Spencer’s drugs. He would never do that,” Carly told Officer Spencer, “ He’s a sculptor. He hardly does anything illegal. He didn’t even know the drugs were there.”
“Okay,” said Officer Spencer, ignoring the ‘hardly’ in her statement, “How did the drugs get there?”
“His friend Otto bought it at a police auction. When you had the car, I guess you didn’t check it properly,” said Sam.
“Don’t take that accusing tone with the police!” Freddie reprimanded her.
“Why not? It’s their fault!” Sam shot back.
“Can you guys release my brother?” Carly asked Officer Spencer, a puppy pout on her face.
“Well, that depends on whether his story checks out,” said Officer Spencer.
“It will, okay?” said Freddie.
“Spencer’s innocent,” Sam emphasized.
Officer Spencer nodded, “We’ll see. I’ll have Frances to check out the car. Excuse me a minute,” he left the room.
“Great,” Freddie sighed, “What’s my mom gonna do when she finds out that Spencer found drugs in his car?”
“Probably make him persona non grata at Bushwell Park,” Carly propped her head up with her hands, “I can see her now, putting up little signs everywhere.”
“That will not happen because she won’t find out. And stop stressing guys!” Sam exclaimed, “Remember, we’re innocent. The police are the ones that are wrong this time.”
Freddie looked at her, “This is a first for you, isn’t it?”
