Notes: (1) When I started this fic, it was M/S and this multi-chapter fic that I realized was going nowhere. I saw the potential for L/S but I didn’t think I could or would write it. Then I realized
miss_vacant 's birthday was coming and she likes L/S. I figured I’d give it a go for real and this is what I produced. I hope you like. (2) It’s also for
foxriver_fic 's
Winter Drabble Challenge. (3) It’s AU from the end of S1. Michael and Sara never met up again. Only Linc and LJ survived. HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!! I hope you like. (The summary is lyrics from the song by Mariah Carey.)
When Lincoln reached out to her, she accepted his apologies, his gratitude, his explanations without hesitation. It was the need to know the truth, the need to hear it from someone who didn’t cause her to lose herself in their eyes. From someone she could be sure didn’t need anything from her except understanding. And she knew he’d always been a man of few words so if he came, she’d better listen and listen good.
That was almost a year ago.
The story couldn’t be told - well it could, he just couldn’t tell it - all at once so they had lunch often - in the same coffee shop in the same booth - before she knew everything. And by that time, a couple of weeks had passed.
They still had lunch after she knew the story because a friendship had blossomed between them and they hadn’t even noticed. They even had dinner often enough that when she got busy at the clinic, he left a message on his voicemail stating his elderly next door neighbor asked him “Why doesn’t that beautiful redhead come around anymore?”
She laughed but didn’t call him back less she have to lie some more. The deluge of patients at the clinic has subsided but she had declined offers of lunch and dinner for an additional two weeks before he threatened to come to the clinic and follow her around like he was her shadow. She didn’t dare challenge him since she’d never known him to back down from anything, not even death.
So she’s at their coffee shop waiting. She catches sight of him as he enters. She waves her hand to get his attention.
“Busy today,” he says giving her a kiss on the cheek before sliding into the seat across from her. She’ll blame the blush in her cheeks on his beard. “Sorry, I’m late.”
“You look like Rudolph,” she tells him, laughing as she does so.
“In case you haven’t noticed, it’s cold outside.”
“You don’t say? Here I thought those were palm trees outside with Christmas lights on them.”
The waitress appears to take their order. When she leaves, Sara asks, “So why were you late? This was your idea after all.”
“Just doing a little Christmas shopping.”
“Find anything good?” she asks as the waitress brings their coffee.
“Yeah.”
She sees something in his eyes she’s seen before. It happened during Thanksgiving. LJ made them tell what they were thankful for so they did. When it was Linc’s turn, he said he was grateful for a few things one of which was her. She saw it. He wasn’t looking at her like she was just a friend.
The next day the clinic got busy so she didn’t have to lie - at least not then - and say they wouldn’t be able to meet for awhile. It was about Michael. It was about her father. But more than anything, it was about messing up the only real friendship she has outside of the one she shares with Katie.
She’d promised she come to dinner on Christmas Eve so she sits on his leather sofa in front of the fire sipping hot chocolate while Lincoln is off doing whatever it is he’s doing. She’s not really sure. The minute A Christmas Story
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0085334/ was off, he lovingly pushed a sleepy LJ upstairs to his room.
When he finally comes back into the room, he stops at the tree picking up box from under it. He crosses to her, smiling shyly and she nearly chokes on her hot chocolate. She’d never seen that smile before and Lord help her, it’s doing things to her. She sits her mug down and watches as he sits beside her.
“This is for you,” he says, thrusting the box towards her.
“We’re opening presents now? Shouldn’t we have done this when LJ was around?”
“No.”
She has no idea what it could be as her heart and mind race with possibilities. She must have been staring for too long because she hears him ask, “Well, aren’t you going to open it?”
She looks up at him, plastering a smile on her face to cover her apprehension. He looks about as nervous as she does. He’s even drumming his fingers on the arm of the sofa.
“But…You know…Um, I didn’t bring your gift,” she stammers. “I was going to bring it tomorrow.”
“I don’t know why you just didn’t bring your stuff to stay over.” She opens her mouth to protest when he stops her with, “Whatever. Just open it.” He’s rather gruff, clearly annoyed with her stalling.
Looking back down at the box, she takes a deep breath before opening it. Tears spring to her eyes immediately, gushing forth wetting the round glass.
It’s a snow globe of two people together holding hands, looking up at the sky. She’s beyond touched that he’d remembered some throwaway comment she’d made months ago. Her father had given her a snow globe once. It had a little girl ice skating in it. Her mother had broken it in one her drunken rages. Her mother had never replaced it, nor had her father. She hadn’t brought herself to care, figuring if she didn’t have another one, it couldn’t get broken.
She hasn’t taken her eyes off it, staring at it as if it’s the manifestation of the feelings that had blossomed between them in the wake of friendship. His voice, breaking her daze forces her to look up at him. She sees pure relief.
“It plays music.”
She turns back to it, flipping it over and turning the pin. The beginning strains of All I Want for Christmas is You fill the space between them until there’s isn’t any space at all.
