I'm fine with it. I think it is probably ethical to a point, depending on how you are using me as a reference. Do I have to memorize any outrageous lies?

Actually, since they only ask for phone numbers, they probably won't bother with a long-distance phone call for a so-so applicant. But it doesn't help my case to leave the reference section blank, so i really appreciate it.
