Wolf Like Me
Part 3

JENSEN
It was only 10:30 am but Jensen felt like he had worked 4 shifts in a row.  Physically he was exhausted, his bones felt heavy and he had a headache.  Mentally, he wasn’t any better off.  He had been unable to stop thinking about Jared since their meeting and it had become almost background noise in his head.   His heart felt like it was aching and he mentally kicked himself in the ass several times a day for being hung up on a guy he had met briefly in a bar.  Not that it was helping.

He was also dealing with his irrational anger towards Chris.  He knew his friend was just looking out for him, but ever since Chris had pulled him out of the bar and away from Jared, Jensen had been pissed at him.  Chris wouldn’t give him a decent reason why he had reacted the way he had and Jensen knew he wasn’t telling him something.  He didn’t like the idea that Chris was hiding something that pertained to him.  It tasted too much like betrayal.

He stopped at reception to glance at his appointments for the rest of the day and groaned.  A full load.

Excellent.  He almost ran to the coffee room to get his fix.

JARED
Standing outside the Evergreen Medical Clinic, Jared shifted from foot to foot, biting his bottom lip as he gazed at the glass doors.  It hadn’t taken much more than googling Christian Kane to find out when he wasn’t playing with his band, he worked at this clinic.  While looking at the clinic website, Jared saw Jensen’s name on the list of employees and despite his nerves felt a jolt of excitement pass through him just seeing the name.  His mate.  His mate was inside there.  His mate that had NO clue what Jared actually was.

After several long lectures and arguments with his parents, Jared realized how foolish he had been trying to ignore the fact he was mated.  He had made himself physically ill and apparently it could also be affecting Jensen.  Just the idea of causing any discomfort to the other man tore at Jared’s heart.  Regardless of whether he felt ready or not as a human, his wolf needed Jensen.  So here he was, ready to begin courting his future mate.  The more he thought about it, the less anger and resentment he felt.  Especially since he had been standing in front of the clinic and immediately felt more calm and at peace and he knew it was because Jensen was near.

He started to sweat and grimaced.  Awesome. A supernatural freak AND a sweat soaked loser.  How could Jensen resist him?  He rolled his eyes at himself as the glass doors swung open and he found himself face to face with Jensen’s friend Chris.  Jared felt his shoulders stiffen defensively but Chris only smiled ruefully before approaching Jared and sticking out his hand.

“Jared, yeah?”  Jared nodded cautiously and took Chris’s hand into his own.  He eyed the smaller man warily but only saw a twinkle in the bright blue eyes fixed on him.

“Jared, I think you and I need to talk before I take you to Jen.”  Chris turned back towards the door and then looked over his shoulder to ensure Jared was following him.  Hearing the magic words “take you to Jen” Jared followed Chris unthinkingly, shuffling the bouquet of flowers he held awkwardly in his hands as he entered the building.

Chris led him down a sterile hallway and stopped in front of a closed door.  Turning the knob he gestured for Jared to enter before him.  Once Jared was in the room, he closed the door behind them and sat down behind the large desk that took center stage in the room, pointing to a plush visitor chair adjacent to the desk.

Jared sat down feeling huge and awkward and confused, but Chris seemed pleasant enough this time and Jared was curious to know what had changed the smaller man’s mind about hating him.

Just as he was about to ask what was going on, the long haired man clasped his hands together and gazed intently at Jared from behind the desk.

“I was raised by a Were,” Chris began, never taking his eyes from Jared.  “Perhaps you know him.  Simon Kane?”

Jared nodded jerkily, extremely startled by Chris’s question.

“Ye-Yes, of course I know Simon, he is well respected in the-“  Jared stopped suddenly, eyes wide, staring intently at Chris.

“The pack,” Chris finished his sentence smoothly, offering Jared a small smile.

Jared, relieved that he hadn’t given up the secrecy, smiled back and nodded again.

Chris smiled once again and said, “The other night, I was concerned at the attention you were giving my friend, Jensen.  He isn’t much for one night stands, or any stands, really.  I know that Weres have a reputation of being,” at that Chris reddened slightly and gave Jared a slightly guilty look, “Promiscuous prior to finding their mates and I was just looking out for Jen.”

Jared’s mind was whirling at the turn of events as he took a second to catch up.  Grinning suddenly he looked at Chris and said, “You thought I was looking at getting laid and were protecting your friend?”

Chris nodded and chuckled, “Well the boy doesn’t get out much, I would hate for his first Dallas experience to be a “love him and leave him scenario.”

Jared laughed at the irony of their situation.  “Well to be honest, that would have been the plan until I realized….”  He trailed off staring at Chris across the desk.

Chris looked at him thoughtfully for a moment.  “So, it’s true.  You mated with Jensen?”

Jared nodded and smiled.  “Yes, I knew right away.  I just didn’t want to admit it.  I didn’t feel ready for a mate but I was being an ass.  I made myself sick trying to avoid the truth.  But now I realize that you can’t fight fate.”

Chris’s smile evaporated and he said, “You do know he has NO idea that Were’s exist right?”  Jared nodded dejectedly, his smile disappearing.  Looking up at Chris he spoke.

“You’re his best friend, how should I approach him?”

JENSEN
Shortly after having his caffeine fix, Jensen found his mood improving drastically.  He had a huge smile on his face and felt almost giddy. He felt almost drawn magnetically to Chris’ office door and wondered if that was the Universe’s way of telling him to forgive his friend.  After all he had just been looking out for Jensen’s best interests.  Coming to a stop outside Chris’ door he raised his hand to knock when suddenly the door flew open.  The figure in the doorway was much larger than Chris and when Jensen looked up, his mouth dropped open in surprise as he came face to face with the man he had not been able to stop thinking about since their brief encounter over the previous weekend.

Jared looked equally shocked at running into Jensen but as soon as he realized who it was, he broke out into a huge, heartbreaking, dimpled grin.  He had the insane thought he might swoon or maybe got the vapors.  Instead he found himself smiling shyly up into Jared’s tilted hazel eyes.

Chris came up behind Jared and said, “Hey Jen, we were just coming to look for you.”  The surprise Jensen felt must have shown on his face because Chris followed that statement quickly with, “I judged Jared too quickly the other night.  He seems like a good guy.  But even so, there are some things you need to know, Jen.”

At those words Jared turned his gaze to Chris and they seemed to communicate silently for a moment.  Finally Chris spoke and said, “How about we all go to Jen’s house tonight after work?  I will pick up some steaks and beer and we can have us a cookout and a conversation.”

Jensen felt like he had walked into a half finished scene in a movie by the way both Chris and Jared were acting but he decided to go along since it meant he would get to spend some time with Jared.  He nodded absently, noticed Jared had turned to stare at him once again, and he felt his face redden at the obvious scrutiny.

Suddenly Jared seemed to snap to attention and smiled shyly at Jensen, before handing him a bouquet of flowers.  Jensen took them awkwardly and mumbled, “thank you.”  The gesture was sweet, but he would be lying if he didn’t feel like sort of a tool for getting flowers.

*********

Jensen found himself moving around his living room anxiously, straightening pillows and dusting surfaces.  He wandered into the kitchen and popped open a beer, taking a huge gulp in an effort to calm his nerves.  The salad was made and he had a selection of different antipasti set out as well.  There were potatoes roasting in the oven.  The flowers he had felt ridiculous accepting were in a vase on the counter, arranged and beautifully fragrant.  All that was needed now was Chris, the steaks and Jared.

Jared.  Jensen sighed and moved to look out the kitchen window.  Seeing the taller man earlier had been a shock, albeit a pleasant one.  Jensen was still confused as to why Jared and Chris seemed to suddenly be old pals, but he wasn’t going to question it.  He was curious about what Chris figured they all needed to discuss.  His mind ran over what it could be.  Maybe Chris and Jared were old friends or lovers who had a falling out?  He knew Chris wasn’t gay but maybe he was bisexual?  Jared was so hot, Jensen figured if anyone could make a guy challenge his sexuality, it was him.  Jensen had never noticed Chris looking at other men or flirting with them, but they didn’t hang out socially very often so it wasn’t like he couldn’t have missed it.

The doorbell rang making him jump, and he rolled his eyes at himself as he walked to the front door.  Opening it wide, he saw Jared standing on his front porch, a bottle of wine in one hand and a bakery box in the other.  He was wearing loose jeans and a blue tee shirt, his hair falling into his eyes slightly and Jensen tried to force himself not to stare.  He smiled warmly.

“Hey Jared, you found the place ok then?”  He gestured for Jared to come into the house and closed the door behind him.

“Yes, your directions were great,” Jared said, turning around to smile at Jensen, dimples digging into his cheeks.  Jensen stared at him for a moment too long and then cleared his throat.  Shuffling slightly and looking down he swept his hand in the direction of the kitchen and said,
“Come on in here, you can put those down and I can check the potatoes.  I was just having a beer, would you like one, or do you want me to open that wine for you?”  He knew he was rambling but there was something about Jared that made him nervous and excited and unsure of himself all at once.

Following close enough behind him that he could smell the man’s intoxicating cologne, he barely heard Jared say, “A beer would be great, I thought we could have the wine with dinner.”

Entering the kitchen Jensen opened the oven and checked the potatoes and then busied himself getting Jared a beer and popping the top off.  He grabbed his own beer and was about to take a drink when Jared said, “To new friends,” and clinked his bottle lightly with Jensen’s.

Jensen looked up suddenly and his eyes met Jared’s.  Without even a second thought both men moved towards each other and suddenly Jared’s mouth was on his.  Jensen heard someone moan and only belatedly realized it was him as felt Jared wrap his strong arms around his waist, pulling him closer until their chests were touching.  Jensen lifted his hands and tangled them into Jared’s hair, angling the taller man’s head and slipping his tongue inside his mouth.  Jared’s tongue touched his and Jensen was spun around until his back hit the counter and then lifted onto it by two strong, large hands.  Both of them fighting for dominance in the kiss, Jensen wrapped his legs around Jared, pulling him in even tighter until their crotches rubbed together.  He heard Jared moan and his lips left Jensen’s, kissing a scorching path down his neck, Jared’s hot breath coming in pants.

“God,” Jensen gulped at the air and he tilted his head to the side to give Jared more access.  He had never had such a physical reaction to anyone and it had been ages since he had even allowed himself any sort of intimacy.  Now he felt out of control, like if Jared stopped kissing and touching him he would explode.  Cupping Jared’s face with both of his hands, he moved their lips back together, catching Jared’s mouth in another searing kiss.

“Jesus Jen,” Jared mumbled against his lips, his hands move all over Jensen’s body.  One large hand suddenly cupped Jensen’s incredibly hard cock and he heard himself moan almost obscenely as he opened his legs wide in an obvious invitation.  He felt Jared’s fingers scrambling at his belt buckle when….

The doorbell rang.  He groaned and heard Jared echoing the sentiment.  Jared pulled away to look into his eyes and Jensen saw the raw lust on the man’s face.  He brushed his hand down Jared’s cheek and sighed.  “That would be Chris, the king of bad timing.”

Jared smiled and chuckled and said, “Uh…where is your bathroom?  I think I need to….cool off.”  At that he gestured to the rather large, obvious bulge in the front of his jeans and Jensen’s mouth started to water as he considered not even opening the door for Chris.

As if reading his thoughts, Jared smiled again and brushed his lips against Jensen’s before stepping away regretfully.  “He has the steaks and I am a huge meat eater.”  Flashing another grin, he made his way down the hall to the bathroom.  Jensen watched him go, breathing deeply to attempt to get his libido under control before answering the door.

The doorbell rang again.  Jensen jumped off the counter feeling his hard on finally subside.

Fucking Chris.

CHRIS
Laden down with a couple of grocery bags, Chris shifted his weight and considered putting one of them down to bang on the door.  He knew Jensen was home, and there was an unfamiliar truck also in the driveway, so he figured Jared had probably beaten him here.

Before he had a chance to drop the bags and knock obnoxiously the door swung open, Jensen on the other side of it, slightly disheveled, face red and lips swollen.  He gave Chris an irritated look and said, “hey” as he turned to walk towards the kitchen.  Chris followed him feeling confused and annoyed and dumped the sacks on the counter.

“Don’t look so happy to see me, I just spent an hour marinating the steaks in my special sauce.”  He huffed a little as he dug in the bags.  Jensen reached up into a cupboard and pulled a platter on which Chris placed the seasoned steaks.

“Sorry,” Jensen said, turning to look at him, “Just bad timing.”

Chris cocked an eyebrow.  “Bad timing?”

Jensen looked uncomfortable for a moment and then shrugged, picking up the platter and heading for the back door.

“Don’t worry about it, man.  Let’s get these bad boys on the grill.”

Feeling out of the loop, Chris followed Jensen out the back door.

JARED
After a few minutes of deep breathing and splashing cold water on his face, Jared had exited the bathroom only to find the house empty.  Tempted to call out for Jensen, he heard talking from the back yard and grabbing his untouched beer off the counter, he took a swig and headed out the door.

Chris and Jensen were standing at the grill, arguing good naturedly about how a true Texan takes his steak.  Jared was content to just watch from afar, admiring the lines of Jensen’s body through the white tee shirt he wore.  His mate was so hot and Jared couldn’t wait to get him into his arms again.

He should have known it would never be that easy.

*********

Dinner finished and bellies full, the three men were lounging in the living room.  Jared sat beside Jensen, shoulders almost touching as they both sipped glasses of wine.  Chris was in an overstuffed chair across from them, drinking a beer and eyeing them intently.

Annoyed, Jensen spoke up and said, “What Chris?  God, you haven’t blinked in ten fucking minutes.  What’s this all about?”

Chris looked guilty for a moment, his eyes darting to Jared.  Jared felt his nerves prick as he cleared his throat and put his wine glass down, turning towards Jensen.

Jensen looked at him curiously and Jared felt his heart trying to beat its way out of his chest.  Licking his lips and squaring his shoulders he stared into Jensen’s eyes.

“There is something you need to know about me.  I am not….the same as other guys you have met.”

Jensen looked more confused than ever and Jared felt his resolve crumbling.  Maybe he could keep his wolf away from Jensen for a while.  Get to know him first.  He knew as he thought it that it wouldn’t work.  His wolf wanted, needed to claim his mate and would not be satisfied with anything less.

Taking a deep breath he gave Jensen a small smile and said, “I’m a werewolf.  I mean, not like a Hollywood Werewolf because I don’t just turn during a full moon and I don’t eat human hearts or anything…but kind of like a werewolf in the way that I can turn into an animal.”  He paused and looked at Jensen from under his lashes.

Jensen’s mouth had fallen open and he was staring with disbelief at Jared.  Suddenly he started laughing and said, “Yeah right, good one.”  Jared didn’t return the smile and he watched as Jensen’s smile faded off his face, his eyes narrowing as he took in Jared’s serious expression. Jensen shook his head a few times, clearly confused.  That was when Chris spoke up.

“It’s true, Jen.”  Jensen’s head turned sharply and he regarded his friend with the same disbelief he had been focusing on Jared.

“You expect me to believe this guy-morphs-into a dog?  Is this some kind of sick joke?  I mean, I figured you two probably knew each other before the other night, but I wouldn’t have thought either of you would pull a stupid prank like this.”

Chris sighed and replied, “I had never met Jared before the other night.  But I know he is telling the truth because my Dad knows him.  And my Dad is..one too.”  Jensen snorted and took a swallow of wine, almost choking in the process.

“Right, your Dad is a werewolf and you never bothered mentioning that to me until now?  I’m supposed to be buying this?”

Chris rolled his eyes and sat forward in the chair, his elbows on his knees and his ice blue gaze fixed intently on his friend.  “It’s secretive Jen, you just can’t tell everyone you meet about it.”

Jensen was so fixed on what Chris  he hadn’t realized that Jared was standing and shedding his clothes.  He jerked up off the couch and backed away slightly.  “What are you doing?”  Despite his anger and confusion he stopped and stared at Jared’s chiseled chest and six pack abs as Jared pulled his tee shirt over his head.  Jared hoped that was a good sign.

Jared reached for his belt buckle and caught Jensen’s eye.  It was do or die time.  “Showing you.”

With that, he closed his eyes and allowed his wolf to come to the surface.

JENSEN
When Jared had started undressing, Jensen had found himself between anger and total lust.  It was short lived because suddenly, in Jared’s place there was a large…animal.  It was obviously a wolf with shaggy chocolate colored fur and familiar hazel eyes.  It cocked its head at Jensen, eyeing him carefully.

Jensen felt his mouth hanging open and he jerked his eyes away from the huge beast to look over at Chris, who looked less surprised.  He dragged his gaze back to the animal and started to shake.  He stuttered out “Impossible,” as the world went a little fuzzy around the edges and he felt his legs give out before he landed on the couch.  Within seconds Chris was beside him, shaking his shoulder and saying his name over and over again.  Jensen shook him off and looked at Jared/Wolf and the air around it suddenly began to shimmer slightly and the wolf disappeared, leaving a fully naked Jared standing in front of him, chest heaving and eyes intense.

Jensen gulped in some much needed air and in a shaky but loud voice he said, “Both of you get the out of my house, right fucking now.”

*********

After several protests and arguments, Jared had finally dressed and he and Chris had left.  Jared had looked back several times as Jensen stood on his porch.  Stopping beside his truck he stared at Jensen for a moment before jogging back to the porch and taking the steps two at a time.  Pulling out his wallet, he took out a card and handed it to Jensen.  Jensen looked down seeing Jared’s name on it.

“It’s my business card.  My personal cell number is written on the back.  I know,” he paused for a moment, eyes fixed on Jensen, “This is a lot for you to take in, but I hope when you deal with it you will call me.  We are meant to be together Jen.”  At that he smiled a small, sad smile at Jensen, leaned forward and brushed his lips against Jensen’s cheek, then turned and ran back towards his truck.  Jensen watched him drive away and tried to ignore the sadness that was overtaking him just knowing Jared was leaving him alone.

Stalking angrily into the house, Jensen slammed the door behind him and walked to the kitchen.  Forgoing the bottle of wine on the counter and the beer in the fridge he reached into a high cupboard and pulled out a bottle of whisky that he kept there for emergencies.  And if finding out the guy you have the total hots for can turn into a huge animal wasn’t an emergency, he didn’t know what was.
