Dear badminton players at WHS,
This is Guang again. This message is to inform you of the present situation of our badminton team, what might to become of it, and what we can all do to help. Yesterday, the athletic director, Gloria Guttierez called our coach and said in a very definite tone that "basketball will have their game." As a result, coach did not question this order because she is the director. Thus, today, 01 March 2006, basketball has taken over our gym again because they needed to have two additional games that they wanted to play. They did not reserve the gym at all with front office. Instead, we lost our reserved schedule for the gym because of this, and therefore were unable to have our final day of tryouts. Coach simply asked when we might have our replacement tryout day. The response? "I don't know, we have to wait."; we have to wait for the basketball game tonight to end first before Gloria decides to do anything about our schedule. We cannot even have the gym from 3-5PM tomorrow and have basketball practice afterwards. According to Gloria, we still have to wait for the results of the game tonight. It is clear that basketball has higher priority than badminton no matter what the situation is. Even the principal did not comment on this today when coach went to speak with him.
In addition, Gloria is an irresponsible athletic director. Our tryouts last Friday would not have happened if it wasn't for the volleyball coach informing us about the availability of the gym. Our coach had already asked Gloria to inform him of any openings for the gym. However, there was no word from Gloria about Friday. In fact, the gym was even available before 5PM, which is when we started tryouts; it was completely empty and undisturbed when we went in to setup at 5PM last Friday. If the director cares about badminton at all, she should have been aware of the schedule opening and informed our coach. However, it was the volleyball coach that helped us with tryouts, and not the athletic director.
Now for the real sad news: coach has already filed in his resignation today. There were no questions asked by neither the principal nor the athletic director. "There is no will at the school," he said. However, he is still willing to try again so long as there is guarantee of cooperation and will from the school - respect and equal opportunity given to other sports, especially badminton. This is when we, the badminton team, need to come together and support each other and our coach.
I, thereby ask all of you who receive this message, to please voice your opinions/concerns by a written letter/notice. It will also help tremendously if your parents be informed of this situation too and also take in part.
Remember, we are a team! In order for us to have a season, we need to make that happen. Those of you who do voice your opinions or that of your parents in written form as suggested by me, please meet me in the cafeteria at lunch tomorrow. I will deliver them to the principal after school tomorrow and talk with him on the present situation. Please spread this news to everyone you know. Go Huskies!
Thank you,
Guang
