Jin was laying on the couch, staring at some late-night quiz show mindlessly when the door opened, his no-strings-attached-as-long-as-you-don’t-fuck-around-behind-my-back not-boyfriend entered. He heard the all too familiar sigh, deciding it would just be best to say silent to avoid another fight that had nothing to do with them and everything with the stressful schedules.
He muted the television, listening to Kame walking to the kitchen, opening cupboards, getting something from the fridge, all that domestic stuff that always made Jin feel like he belonged here. Today the noises were loud, doors slamming shut, Kame cursing as he dropped something, the screech of a chair pulled out.
Years ago Jin would’ve gone over, asked what was wrong and maybe Kame would’ve answered, most of the time not, but usually it just ended with both of them anxious. Jin couldn’t stand how Kame fretted over the little stuff, and Kame couldn’t stand anyone judging him when he was in a mood.
Now, he just lay there silently, waiting for the angry sounds to start fading, listening to the clinking of the spoon as Kame ate the soup Jin had left in the fridge.
When it got silent for a long while, no movement to be heard Jin let himself fall into a light slumber, still aware of everything around him, but letting his mind wander. He noticed absent-mindedly how the pillow his face was pressed against smelled like himself, one of the small signs that revealed he wasn’t just an occasional visitor at this apartment.
Of course there was the key, too, but that he had had since before any of this, of them, had happened. They had always been close, sometimes more and sometimes less and that hadn’t changed even if the nature of the closeness had.
There was a sound, and Jin was awake again, pushing a few of the extra pillows out of the way. Kame walked into the living room like on cue, didn’t stop until he was next to the couch and then safely tugged against Jin’s chest.
Jin didn’t really like the smell of Kame’s current conditioner, thought he might buy him a new one, maybe the next time he went to America. Kame was funny like that, he wouldn’t take presents from Jin unless there was an occasion that called for it and even then it had to be something small.
Jin didn’t mind, Kame wasn’t high-maintenance like a girlfriend, not when you knew how to handle him and that Jin had learned over the years.
They never talked about the times they spent apart, those didn’t matter since they weren’t an item, just something that happened, gravitating towards each other and then away again, like two moons circling the same planet.
