Carnival lights, the smell of popcorn, and people passing by with cotton candy and stuffed animals is new and exciting. You’d never been to a carnival before, but he had insisted you come to this one.
“You’ll have fun,” he said, “I promise.” And you trust him, more than anyone. The crowd scares you a bit because of how large it is, but the panic is quelled by the feel of his hand holding yours, a bond that you know won’t be broken, because you can feel how strong it is. You follow after him, letting yourself stumble along. As long as you can see him, it will all be okay.
The music playing from the loudspeakers and the screams of people on rides hurts your ears, and you wince. He stops and pulls you into him.
“Are you okay Teukie?” you can pick out his voice over everything, even though you can barely hear yourself thinking. You nod in response and he smiles. “Come on.”
Next, he stops at a tent that has stuffed animals hanging here and there. You see a stuffed raccoon and find it adorable, and you don’t notice that he can see you eyeing it.
“Hey, I’ll play,” he calls to the game operator, and the man nods. He pays the man and is handed some balls to throw at moving targets. You watch him intently. One, two, three, he knocks them all down and you wonder how he ever got so good at that.
“Which prize do you want?” he asks you, and you point to the raccoon. Next thing you know, you’re squeezing it in your arms. He buys you food and soda and cotton candy, wins you a couple more prizes, and seems to be having a great time. It’s dark now, and the lights make the fair grounds look gorgeous. He smiles at you after a bite of candied apple and you laugh. This is more fun than you’d thought it’d be.
All of a sudden though, he is not across the table from you anymore, and panic sets in. You stand up and look around frantically, but the crowds of people obscure your view.
“Kangin?” you call quietly, but you can’t even hear yourself over the noise. You continue to look around, and finally see him coming through the crowd. When he’s closer to the table you run over and throw your arms around him, burying your face in his shirt and holding him tightly.
“I was scared,” you say quietly, and somehow he hears you. He doesn’t let go of you even as he leads you back to the table and sits down with you.
“I’m sorry,” he says, stroking your hair, “I shouldn’t have left you. The crowd must have scared you, huh?” You nod slightly and curse yourself for your phobia, but you don’t move. His hand carefully stroking your head is calming, and as long as you’re holding him, you’re safe. Finally, you’re okay again, and the two of you get up. All of the prizes and candy and food is stuffed promptly into your bag, all except the cute raccoon, which you continue to squeeze tightly.
“Hey Teukie,” he says gently, “let’s go on the Ferris wheel, okay?” You nod and let him lead you again knowing that as long as he’s here you’ll be okay. You get to the ride and wait in line until it’s your turn to get on.
“Have a good ride,” the operator says as the two of you climb into the cabin and the door shuts. Immediately, the outside noise vanishes, and you let out a sigh of relief.
“I’m sorry,” says Kangin, “you must be having an awful time. I know how much you hate the crowds and the noise, but I really thought you’d have fun. It was my mistake.” You shake your head and walk over to him.
“No, I did have fun, because I was with you.” He smiles at you.
“Are you just saying that?” You shake your head again.
“No, we should come again sometime.” You feel the giant wheel pull to a stop, and a jolt of panic hits you, but Kangin is relaxed.
“Look at the view!” he says, and you look out. All around you, the lights of the city are visible, and as scared as you were, the beauty of the sight takes your breath away.
“This is what I really wanted to show you,” he said, “I used to come up here alone, but I wanted to come with you. I wanted to show this to you.” You smiled at him, and he stood up, both of you walking over to the middle of the cart. Carefully, he lifted your chin up and kissed you, sweet and passionate. You smiled into the kiss. It couldn’t have been more perfect. For a few more seconds, the ride stayed still, giving you a beautiful view, and then it began to take the two of you back down to earth.
When you got off the ride, the two of you walked hand in hand towards the exit of the carnival. Though it was late, there were still so many people waiting to enjoy the carnival, play the games, and eat the food. People on the roller coaster were still screaming, and the music was still blaring, and there was still a crowd, but you couldn’t help the smile on your face. Kangin was here, Kangin was with you, and you were safe, you were safe and loved. You squeezed the stuffed raccoon again, and the two of you walked out of the carnival gates.
As you sat in the car, raccoon plush on your lap, and Kangin in the driver’s seat, you stared out the window at the lights of the city around you. They were all beautiful, but couldn’t even come close to the view from the Ferris wheel.
“Teukie,” said Kangin quietly, “I hope you had fun. I really do. I love you, you know that?” You smile sleepily, and nod, squeezing his had that’s atop the shift lever in the car.
“I love you too Kangin and that was fun. I’m so glad you showed that to me.” The two of you smile, and you can feel your heart soar, back up to the top of that Ferris wheel, and the dream you lived there, when you were with Kangin-in heaven.
