One snowy night and angel visited me in my dreams. He was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen. He had red brown hair tied up in a ponytail, smooth pale skin, and a smile that melted my heart. Small, shining white wings graced his back, and all around him there was nothing but light and feathers.
“Hello,” he said, and his voice was the sweetest thing I’d ever heard. He came a bit closer to me. “Are you all alone?” Tilting his head to one side, he stared at me with his beautifully brown eyes.
“No,” I said, and then, “well, maybe.”
“I’ll keep you company,” he said, and he did. Grabbing my hand he pulled me onto his lap and ran soothing hands through my hair. My eyes wouldn’t stay open, even though I told them they had to, and before I knew it morning had come and taken the beautiful angel away from me.
That dream happened 15 years ago when I was 8. Now I’m 23 and I haven’t seen him since.
That is, until another fateful snowy night.
“You,” I said, spotting the familiar figure slumped under the streetlight. Same lovely hair, same beautiful face, same light all around him, but where were the wings? And why were there tears streaming down his face? I approached him slowly, like approaching a wild animal.
“It’s you,” he said quietly with a smile, “are you still alone?” I shook my head. “That’s good,” he said, but his tears just began again as he sat and shivered in the cold. A pang shot through my chest, and taking off my jacket, I wrapped it around his thin shaking shoulders.
“We should get you out of the cold,” I said and took his hand, pulling him up. Only then did I notice the blood dripping slowly down his back.
“Oh god,” I said, “we’ve got to get you to a hospital.”
“No,” he said, putting his hand on top of mine, “no.” The second time was softer, more desperate. I couldn’t understand it but I wasn’t going to chase him away from me. This time I wouldn’t let him go no matter what.
As soon as we got to my house I sat him down on the couch. Grabbing all of the medical stuff I had in my house, I ran back out to where he was.
Cutting long white strips of bandage I wrapped them around his slender body.
“Does it hurt?” I asked him and he shook his head. “What happened?” He sighed and closed his eyes as the tears started to flow again.
“He doesn’t want me,” he said quietly, “I’m not good enough anymore.”
“Who?” I asked, bewildered. Who could ever abandon someone so beautiful?
“No one,” he said quietly. ‘I need to go buy more medicine and bandages tomorrow,’ I thought to myself, and then he turned to face me.
“Why are you doing this for me?”
“Huh?”
“Why are you…caring for me like this?”
I smiled gently at him.
“Because you came to me that time I couldn’t sleep…and I never forgot about you since.” His face softened.
“My name is Jungsu,” he said quietly.
“Youngwoon,” I replied. Carefully, I reached out my hand and stroked his cheek. His skin was still soft and warm, just like in my dream of fifteen years ago. He closed his eyes and a small smile graced his lovely features.
“I’m a bit tired,” he said.
“You can sleep in my bed, and I’ll sleep on the floor,” I told him, but he shook his head.
“You don’t have to be alone,” he said, and taking my hand he stood up. Leading him to the room, we climbed under the covers.
This time I refused to fall asleep and let him slip away, so I just lay there tracing lines onto his bandaged chest as he smiled calmly. Eventually, his eyes began to flutter shut, and then he was asleep his chest gently rising and falling.
“Jungsu,” I whispered, lacing my fingers in his, “this time I won’t let you slip away.”
I didn’t even remember falling asleep.
But I remember waking up with a start, not seeing my beautiful angel next to me.
“Jungsu-ah,” I called, panic stricken, had he left me again? “Jungsu-ah!”
“Ah, Youngwoon-ah,” came his quite, sweet voice from the kitchen. Running in, I saw him at the stove, cooking. Walking quickly over to him I threw my arms around him.
“Don’t scare me like that again,” I said a bit too loud, “I thought you’d left me again.” He winced a bit in pain, but moved closer to me and buried his face in my chest anyway.
“I told you, you don’t have to be alone anymore, didn’t I?” He said, and I nodded.
“Is it a promise?” He paused to think for a second.
“It’s a promise.” I let him go and for the first time since I’d brought him here, he smiled, such a pure and lovely smile that I had to lean down and capture those lips.
As soon as he pulled away from the kiss he turned back to the stove.
“Breakfast will be ready in a little while,” he said.
The rest of the day was spent shopping, for food, for medicine, and for clothes. He didn’t fit anything I had and he couldn’t walk around as scantily clad as he had been when I found him. We laughed and kissed and held hands just like any other couple. My once fleeting vision of loveliness was mine to hold. I was the happiest man on earth.
“Jungsu-ah,” I said that night as we snuggled together under the covers.
“Yeah?”
“I-I think I love you,” I said. For a moment, he just stared at me, and I was afraid. Did he not feel the same?
“I love you too Youngwoon, but…” he trailed off, not finishing the sentence.
“What is it?” I asked. His face clouded over with sadness and he closed his eyes.
“My time’s almost up.”
“What do you mean by that?” Tears began to drip down his cheeks for what seemed like the millionth time in the few days we’d spent together.
“After an angel loses its wings it falls to earth. But angels aren’t allowed to stay. Eventually, they must either find a way to get back their wings, or they will…cease to be.”
“You mean die?” I shook my head, “Jungsu-ah, I don’t understand.”
“Not die exactly,” he mumbled, “but Youngwoon-ah, there’s no way I’m going to get my wings back,” he said, “so…in a few days on the last day of snowfall…I’ll just…become a snowflake and melt away with the spring.” Something invisible pierced my chest, and an agonizing pain shot through me.
“You can’t,” I said, “you promised I didn’t have to be alone.” The look of pain that materialized on his face hurt me even more than the previous pain I had felt.
“I’m sorry,” he said, “but I really thought I could stay.”
“What’s stopping you from getting those wings back?” I asked, “Whatever it is,” I said desperately, “whatever it is, I’ll get them back for you.” He shook his head, the tears coming faster now.
“What’s stopping me is the fact that I love you!” he cried. “If I get my wings back I’ll have to leave you again. Either way, you’ll be alone. At least if I’m not around anymore you can forget me. It’ll be easier that way!” He looked at me one last time and stood up, but I wouldn’t let him go.
“No!” I yelled and grabbed his wrist, “listen!” He stopped, and we both stood still. “If you get your wings back, you can still come and see me in my dreams,” I said, “and…if you’ll wait for me, I know we can be together someday.” His face that had, a second ago, been so sad morphed into one filled only with love.
“Humans live long lives,” he said solemnly, and I just nodded.
“But it doesn’t matter as long as I have you.” I pulled him close to me and just held him there, wishing for time to just stop. A river of tears had begun to flow from my eyes, and his muffled crying could be heard throughout the silent house. For hours, we stood there.
When I woke up the next morning, all I could do was stare out the window. He had left last night. I could feel the exact moment that he regained his wings. At the same second, my heart ripped in two.
At least you can see him again, I thought quietly, he promised. Getting out of bed, I saw the package of clothes we had bought together still laying where it had been yesterday. I pulled out my cell phone and called in sick to work. Pulling the blankets over my head again, I called out for my angel.
“Jungsu-ah.”
“I’m here,” came the warm reply. Before me, bathed in light, with his beautiful red brown hair tied in a ponytail, his pale skin smooth and soft, his sparkling brown eyes, small sad but loving smile, and bathed in light with small pretty wings, my angel stood before me.
“I miss you so much already,” I said, and he pulled me into his embrace, a wave of warmth washing over me. Running his fingers through my hair, he kissed my forehead.
“Just like the snow, I’ll always come back to you, no matter how far away I seem.” Feeling my eyes shut, I lace my fingers in his. “I will always be here in your dreams.” His words offered momentary comfort as I just lay there in his arms.
“I wish tomorrow didn’t have to come,” I said to him.
“I know.”
“The snow’s all going to melt,” I murmured sadly to myself.
“But it has to go, so that it can return,” he said.
“Just like you?”
“Just like me.”
“Saranghaeyo my lovely snowflake angel,” I said as I leaned up to capture his lips.
“Saranghaeyo my dearest love,” he said as soon as we pulled away.
As I woke up and looked out of my window at the melting snow, I felt a constant and painful thudding in my heart. A single tear rolled down my cheek at the sight of the tiny puddles because his reflection shone in each one.
“I don’t have to be alone,” I said to myself and stared at the sky, “I’m never alone.”
I’m missing my angel, as fleeting and lovely as the snow. I can’t wait for winter to come again and my angel to return to me, to keep the promise of everlasting love. When the winter cold envelopes the world I will see you again, and I will be warm, surrounded by a feeling that only you can give me. I want you, I need you, and I love you, so always return to me, my snow flake angel.
