Upcoming!

It's always nice--and exceptionally rare--when Hollywood chooses to pander to my warped cinematic tastes.  And this December is looking to be one of those occasions.

Item the first:  Tim Burton's Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.  All I have to say, it's got Johnny Depp with Bride of Frankenstein hair, a Jack Sparrow-meets-Inspector Abbeline accent...singing!  I'll take that in my Christmas stocking.  Mmm...meat pies.

Item the second:  I am Legend, based on the eponymous 1954 sci-fi horror novel by Richard Matheson.   This adaption will be Hollywood's third updating of the novel; the first (titled The Last Man on Earth) starred Vincent Price in 1964, the second (Omega Man), in 1971, featured Charlton Heston.  This one stars Will Smith as lonely scientist Robert Neville who is seemingly the last man left alive after a pandemic has wiped out the human race...or is he?  I am Legend is also credited as an inspiration for George A. Romero's zombie movies (I think Night of the Living Dead even borrows snippets of The Last Man on Earth's score).  The casting of Will Smith amuses and perplexes me (I know he's a two-time Oscar nominee...but I just can't get ID4 and I, Robot out of my head), but I'm hopeful, nonetheless.

It's inexcusable that I haven't read the book, yet.  That's my new goal, to find and read I am Legend before December.
