Nobody has claimed responsibility. And I've lost my will to fight and be angry. I'm just resigned and frustrated. In the last three months, I've had 20 stir bars, 1 powder funnel, and these solvents disappear on me. I'm starting to realize that this is an uphill battle. Either somebody is lying, somebody outside of the group is stealing our ( Read more... )

Someone with an ego or perhaps a personality disorder has run amok in your lab. I'm betting after you tell some people what's been happening they will be looking sharper for disappearing materials. And I'm also betting they'll find other stuff missing. Hopefully the sticky-hands bandit will realize his/her cushy days are over and will stop.

nobody likes it when their stuff gets messed with. and it is inconsiderate of others to take without even a token "oh, yeah, I borrowed it".

hope it gets figured out soon and you can stop worrying about sticky fingers!

Good grief, that really sucks that somebody is taking your stuff, when you've already made it clear all they need to do is ask. How sucky! I hope the situation is resolved soon. *hugs*

You're not thinking too much. And definitely don't let it go. This situation is tough b/c there are no guidelines or a system about sharing/taking materials.

I think it's a good idea to mention it to your fellow lab mates that someone keeps taking your stuff. Not only will your lab mates start checking their stuff, but I bet the offending person will hear about it and think twice about taking your stuff. If they see how much it bothers you, maybe they'll stop.

Then if you learn that this is a problem throughout the lab, you can bring it up with the head lab person and say some kind of policy needs to be put in place. I don't know how far you want to take it.

Or you could take Mark's suggestion. He says you should post a sign that says, "Hey, F*@#$*! Stop stealing my stuff." :)
