Cousins
A grandmother who only knows granddaughters
Two urchin gifts placed on top of her alter
To falsely bring back thoughts of swing dance
A piano bench that’s polished black
A mother who stacks her life into a paper sack
Decorates those infants as fruits and nymphs
Displayed spread thick on top of that mantle
For a grandmother holding two little devils
How can you grow ?
If you’ve never eaten the fruits of the earth
How can you give?
If you’ve never had to move a hand
How can you love?
If you’ve never known another’s heart
Two girls who wear powder and costumes
Breaching the boundaries of their bedrooms
Only to consume swine and wax food
Nothing to smell but cold air in their nostrils
A belly that rounds as the eyes grow beady
Blank and blue as a sky with no birdies
Emotion vanquished for vanity’s sake
I bitterly wait for that fate to feel a smack in the face
How can you grow ?
If you’ve never eaten the fruits of the earth
How can you give?
If you’ve never had to move a hand
How can you love?
If you’ve never known another’s heart
