Derek has been living in Toronto for three weeks when he starts to miss her. And not in the way he misses Marti or Nora or his dad or the Spy Kids. He can’t believe what the innocent crush he had on her evolved into.
She moved into an apartment in London after university, got a great job, and even became semi-cool by dating a football player from a national team. All of this he hears from his siblings, because the two of them finishing school means that she is finally rid of him and does not want him in her life.
Sometimes, when he is on his couch nursing a beer, watching the hockey game on CBC he has to turn around quick; the unmistakable sound of Casey breaking his name in two is on the wind. Sometimes he gets a whiff of strawberries that used to slip through the vent between them and into his room. Sometimes his eyes fly open wide, his body jerking awake when he feels the other side of the bed sag. He doesn’t know what it is, but when the bag of Scrabble tiles falls onto the floor, he has to convince himself that the letters do not spell his name on purpose.
When he gets the call, he figures it out too late.
….
While the ceiling above her drifted in and out of focus, and the only feeling left was the pain from the slice her boyfriend gave her as a parting gift, Casey was left with a few regrets. Her favourite on the list is never getting around to telling her annoying stepbrother that she never stopped loving him. As the ceiling slipped out of focus one last time, he was the last thing on her mind.
