Advice on British Shows?

Oct 29, 2011 15:38

So I signed up for the British TV Technical Challenge that marcasite is holding, but I haven't seen a whole lot of any of the shows, except Sherlock and the first season of Merlin.  Recommendations on which show to start watching?

Thanks! I'd been avoiding Doctor Who after seeing a few episodes from what I think might have been Series 2 or 3 of the new version (with 10 and Rose), but being put off by just the darkness. (I fully acknowledge how ridiculous that sounds given how dark I can handle stuff in most other ways -- a la the darkest fanfics and more personally dark stuff, I suppose, but somehow the idea of systematic darkness with no personal edge, in the way of the cybermen, where there's no pretty face to associate with that darkness, is just... different. And yes, I realize how awful that should-have-been sentence was.)

ANYWAY, I finally tried it again based on your suggestion, this time starting with 11's first season and am feeling pretty hooked. I've also seen a few episodes of Torchwood as well and liked it well enough.

Also, on an unrelated but much more important note, I promise I have not forgotten about betaing. I WILL get to that soon, hopefully by tomorrow at the latest. Once again, it's so exciting to see you in fandom again! I have to confess that I am still kind of a WitchGirl fangirl at heart. My high school self would likely still be fangirl-squealing over the prospect of betaing one of your stories. They are truly among the best (and I don't just mean out of fanfic).

Starting with 11 and the Ponds is fair enough. I do so love that trio!

The Cybermen are not my favorite villains, but if you're introduced to the Weeping Angels in series 5, that's not their best episode. My favorite Weeping Angels episode is in series 3 (which is actually my least favorite series) with Martha and 10 - but it's about someone else (not them). It's called Blink - for a stand-alone, it's fantastic.

I love the Ponds, but they tie for favorite companion with Donna Noble (series 4) who was with 10 right before he became 11. Donna Noble is played by comedienne Catherine Tate, so she brings a lot of humor to the show. So if you ever decide to go backwards, definitely don't miss series 4.

When I was student teaching, my cooperating teacher said she couldn't watch series 2-4 because of David Tennant. She saw him HP4 and said he gave her the creeps as Barty Crouch Jr, and she just couldn't see him as the Doctor. So I kept trying to get her to watch series 5 (because of Matt Smith) but she was worried she had missed too much. Maybe I'll e-mail her and tell her others have started with 5.

And the fic - I understand, we all get busy! Don't stress yourself over it. I remember taking FOREVER to get back to you on some of your Se Salva chapters.

Also, the River Song storyline starts (ends?) in an two-parter in series 4 with Donna Noble called "Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead" which is also really, really clever.
