Ok, ok.. so I haven't been wasting my "vacation" before everything takes off full throttle being a complete blob. I've done a couple things from my 101 List!
I've read two books since I started the project. This is a lot for me. I do not read for fun much anymore. When I was a kid, that's all I did. Now, my adult onset ADHD keeps me from doing much focusing. :( Haha, no.. really.
The Satanic Verses by Salman Rushdie.
This is basically about two famous Indian actors who "die"-? on the same hijacked & bombed plane, but when they fall to earth they are transformed- one into the angel Gibreel, one into the Shaitan (devil). Literally.. Gibreel gets a halo; the Shaitan gets goat hooves and horns. Then they try to reclaim their old lives, there's some revenge, some reuniting, some happy, some sad, but mostly sidetracked stories about Indian culture, Islam, and folktales.
I am a huge Rushdie fan and, although I liked the wackoness of this novel, it was my least favorite Rushdie piece I've read so far. It was almost too out there and it seemed like his usual sidestepping into subplots went too far and reminded me of a non-funny episode of Family Guy where all his flashbacks are only semi-related. (Oh, wait.. isn't every episode of Family Guy non funny? Whoops.) But still.. it's Rushdie, so the descriptions are beautiful. Slow, slow, slow read.
My rating: 7/10
They Poured Fire on Us from the Sky, by Benson & Alepho Deng, Benjamin Ajak
This is a multi-faceted autobio about three of the "Lost Boys" of Sudan- displaced after political and religious (jihad) war in the region during the late 80s and through the 1990s. Two of them are brothers and Benjamin is their cousin. It tells their stories chronologically through rotating points of view (which I love) as they lose and find each other multiple times on their sad but always hopeful journey as children making their way to safety (well, more often to more war and struggle) through the dry and rainy seasons of treacherous Sudan, eastern Ethiopia, and northern Kenya. They end up in America, which is how they get to tell their miraculous stories. Very fast read.
My rating: 9/10
So, I am a creature of habit.. even more so than most creatures of habit. Every time I have gone to Quizno's since I had the Honey Bourbon sandwich about three years ago, I have ordered that very thing. Not once did I veer from this choice. It's something anyone who goes to Quizno's with me likes to make fun of, but whatever- it's the best thing there. Why choose your second choice when you could have the best every time!??! Anyway.. on Sunday I got something new!
My Quizno's Taste Adventure
1. The Pan Asian chopped salad (~200 calories, since I only used a bit of the dressing)
2. Cantina Chicken Sammie (265 calories)- ok this should have been cheating 'cause it came with Honey Bourbon mustard
The verdict: It was good, but the joy I get from the carbs in the bread and the knowledge that my whole sub is only 310 CALORIES makes the Honey Bourbon chicken on wheat still my #1 choice. Although I didn't regret not getting my usual since I was pretty full from the two things (that were almost double the cals of my usual), I think I will go back to the sammich. =] Maybe on occasion I will try something new, just because the Pan Asian salad was rather interesting. WINNER: OLD FAITHFUL, HONEY BOURBON CHICKEN.
And I wrote two handwritten letters last night that I will put in the mail today. One is to Sandy (
loved ) and one is to Steph (
sseafaring ) .. check the mail at the end of the week, lovies! If you'd like me to send you something and you live within an area that I can use my U.S. 44 cent (or is it 45? I dunno) stamps, feel free to send me your address. ;)
