Hey, so Saturday was The Winter Festival of Pie, the only holiday of the year completely invented by me! This year was the year of people showing up early and then leaving. But there was a big crowd at the beginning of the night. I will attempt to recall who all was there: Brien, Kristi, their two friends Gerald and a woman whose name I forget,
_iain and Ginger,
chris_wass,
razz,
irena_seraphina, Darenna, Kristin, Jeremy, Jeff, Marie, Chris D., Jesse,
thaitea, Donna, Maureen, Don, Randy, Lori and Charlie, Linda and Bernie, Jennifer and Kyle, Steve and Libby,
kyle_aitch and Elyse, Breavey, Kat and Ben and Liam,
el_tabor and Sue,
pattersonphoto, Dennis and his friend whose name I forget,
isoebella and Patrick, Sue, Patrick Hare, Zoe...and that might be it. If I'm forgetting anyone, let me know and I'll add their name. And if I forgot you, please forgive me - it was a couple of days ago and I was overstimulated because everyone arrived at once.
As far as pies go, I will never remember all of them, but there was mine, the Napoli Country Cheese pie, along with potato/veggie/pesto pie, cheeseburger pie with a French fry crust on top, Cubano Sandwich pie (the hit of the night, I think), hot chocolate pie (my personal favorite), crab and cheese quiche/tart, chocolate peanut butter pie, banana cream pie, three different kinds of strawberry rhubarb, French silk, shepherd's pie, banana cream pie with chocolate, some kind of bacony cheese pie, some other kind of veggie pie, mini pumpkin pies, I heard there was a pizza but it must have gotten wolfed because I didn't see it, mini tortilla chip bean pie things, raisin/coconut pie, grasshopper/chocolate mousse pie, coconut cream pie, Julie's pie that I didn't get to try but looked like it had spinach in it, tiny pies-on-a-stick, chicken pot pie...I don't know what all else.
Chris D. made the mulled wine with a name I forget again and it was really good! Although he's been making it for years, this was the first time I tried any: it's usually gone so quickly that by the time I'm ready to taste it, I'm too late. But this year I had several glasses. And one Dogfish Head Indian Brown Ale. Breavey brought a bottle of Four Roses Small Batch, so now we have some Small Batch and Single Barrel and we can do our own in-house comparison. There is a ton of beer and wine leftover so I'll renew my descent into alcoholism soon.
As far as actual party antics, I don't have much to say. I spent a lot of time talking to my three classmate friends who showed up (two of them with husbands) so I barely got to say much to anyone else other than hi and bye. I talked more with the end of the night crowd: Dennis and his friend and Randy and Steve and Libby. As I mentioned, many people left early to go to other things, but I was glad they stopped by and ate some slices. Sienna Vienna had a good time: early in the night there was a substantial pie spill (two slices) and she was all over that, then at some point when I was in the other room there was some kind of wine incident that involved a spill as well as Sienna getting into the wine. Later she was just lying in the doorway between the kitchen and dining room, not moving except to wag. I kept saying, "You're loaded, aren't you?" Yesterday she was all fired up, wanting more pie. I'd left some of the leftovers out on the bar and she was standing there, looking up at them, occasionally woofing.
There were a lot of sweet pies this year and not so much savory, at least with the leftovers. I'll be eating French silk pie for a long long time, not that there's anything wrong with that.
