Proud owner of a new iPhone, but some reservations

I couldn't take it anymore. The day after my birthday, armed with a new set of crystal-clear sounding Bose earbuds my sweetie bought me, I headed up to the Apple store and became the proud new owner of an Apple iPhone.

Today I got to test it out during the commute to work. It's got to be the best new toy I've ever had.

I have a few reservations, but there is more good than bad, and I've long been a loyal devotee to Apple products. In my opinion, they still far outweigh anything Microsoft could throw out on the table.

As with most of their products, the iPhone is intuitive and boasts a clean, I-can't-keep-my-hands-off-of-it sleek design. I'd like to be able to add third-party apps and customize to my own needs, as well as have the ability to edit Word, Excel and Powerpoint docs and view Adobe PDFs. There may be workarounds online through Web 2.0 apps. I just have not had time to explore.

What I did read that kind of saddened me was that the iPhone's Bluetooth functionality only plays nicely with the headsets, but not with things I'd love to hook up to my iPhone for my own extended needs, like a GPS receiver and external keyboard for heavy blogging needs. So, I do have those complaints. Also, another downer, was that I plugged it into the Bluetooth input area for my Alpine stereo head unit, and unlike its cousin, an iPod predecessor, it did not work.

The virtual keyboard on-screen also took some getting used to, but I think that will iron itself out. I've read that it is set up to eventually adapt itself to the user's personal style of dexterity with the keys; so I guess I will see, over time.

One irritation, to both Tim and myself, was that the Apple Store sold him the Bose Triport headphones but nothing was ever mentioned about them not fitting w/the iPhone. An adaptor to make the headphones fit into the purposely designed recessed headphone input, for a little over 10 bucks, fixed everything; but since no one said anything to us about this, we ended up making a separate trip up to the mall to purchase this on the same day -- a mad dash more like, as we didn't discover this until ten minutes to the closing time of the store.

Still, I am satisfied. It has to be the best combination toy, phone and multimedia gadget I've ever owned.
