A quote from City of Ashes by Cassandra Clare
absolutely spoiler free, as this isn't about the book, just a quote.
"If you don't tell the truth to the people you care about the most, you stop being able to tell the truth to yourself"
I found this line very poignant, but the more I think about it, the more I disagree with it. The quote came up in the context of someone not telling someone else they loved them, as they believed that the object of their affection did not feel similarly.
Personally, if I've ever not felt comfortable sharing something with someone, it hasn't changed how I feel about the secret. What's happened instead is my relationship with the person has changed. Ultimately, if I don't feel safe with someone, I end up removing them from my life. This situation has played out in different ways, but has always had the same result.
I'm going to chew on the quote some more, and continue to see how it resonates with me.
as an aside, I found this book, the second in a series, pretty good. Not nearly as good as the first (which was just about perfect), but I still have hope for the next, the last in the series.
