I don't know if I ever shared this piece of advice with anyone who is reading this, but I've offered it up several times to clients (when I was a therapist) and residents (when I was an RA): no matter what happens, no matter how hard it gets, finish your bachelor's degree. You can lose your job, you can lose your house, you can lose your legs, but no one can take away your degree once you've earned it. If you're ever faced with having to start over, starting over with a degree is much easier that starting over with nothing.
This piece of advice was given to me my freshman year of college, by the most demanding college professor I've ever had. These words carried me through, got me back on my feet after the many blunders I created. It took me until May, 2003, but I got the damn degree.
I've been back at KCC for three weeks, having had to start over, but because I have a bachelor's degree, an associate's worth of computer networking classes will get me into a career I can handle over the long term. Since coming back to Cornflake, I've entertained the notion of dropping in on this man, and thanking him for his words.
I waited too long; he died Friday night. Maybe he's offering another piece of advice, never put off telling people how much they mean to you.
