Scholars discuss Buddhist ways

Two visiting scholars and meditation masters will lecture on Tibetan Buddhist music and meditation this month at the Tibetan Buddhist Meditation Center.
Khenpo Tsultrim Gyamtso Rinpoche will discuss the early songs of the 12th-century yogi Milarepa. He has been invited to teach in Europe, Asia, North and South America, according to information from the meditation center. His talks on "the songs Milarepa sang following his first retreat in the cave of Tak Nya Lung Ten Puk and his achievement of the mastery of vajra song" will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday, and at 2 p.m. Jan. 28 and 29.
The Dzogchen Ponlop Rinpoche will lecture on Vajrayana traditions of "Mahamudra, Dzogchen and the Middle Way." Dzogchen teaches and writes about Tibetan Buddhism for the Western world. He is the publisher of Bodhi magazine, and his most recent book is "Wild Awakening: The Heart of Mahamudra and Dzogchen," according to the center release. His lectures will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday and Friday, and at 9:30 a.m. Jan. 28 and 29.
The cost is $20 per lecture, $70 for the weekend series and $150 for the entire series. For reservations, call the Kagyu Thegchen Ling meditation center, 595-8989. Information is online at www.ktlhonolulu.org.

Then again I think to myself... Buddhists are allowed the freedom to express their religion in Hawaii. Shouldn't Hawaiians? For the record I consider myself a synthesis of religions partly due to my ancestry (English, Hawaiian, Chinese, and Portuguese.) Buddhism is very much a part of my life.
