When I was a very little girl... I was very poor. Well very few people know but Aunty Genoa Keawe was very compassionate to me when I was a little girl.
See... she used to teach hula and she let my mother bring my sister and I to learn hula FOR FREE.
I never forgot that about her. How kind and compassionate she is.
Of course she won't remember me. I was just a POOR little girl back then but kind, compassionate people always make an impression on me. She is one of them. The thing is that she KNEW that we were poor too but she still treated us with respect so I REALLY admire her.
But one won't read this in the local papers. They don't cover that kinda stuff.
Also I know that some people are surprised that I don't use the diacritical marks when writing olelo oiwi. It's because the missionaries added them and with all due respect... it shows a colonized mentality so I usually do not include the marks. For example I don't write kahako nor okina. It's because I try to think out of the box. That is outside the Colonized Mentality Box *LOL* Anyway it's just one of my habits and has been for awhile. I'm sure that some people have already noticed :-) Also it goes against one of my goals to help some Hawaiian language students at UH-Hilo and at UH-Manoa but as long as they study the language... I am okay with that. I just don't/won't use the marks because it's my choice.
