Disclaimer: I do not own any of the Twilight characters, they belong to Stephanie Meyer. No money is being made from this.
AN: Something tells me I did the wrong thing. I’ve been having problems writing this next part, probably because it was meant to be a one shot story. However I pushed myself so this could be done. I’m not totally happy with the result, and probably will end up rewriting this chapter. But until then, I post this because I hate to leave things incomplete. Please review, so I can correct my mistakes T.T
IN OUR EYES
CHAPTER TWO
-WHAT?!!
Bella just smiled, but the spark in her eyes spoke of something Jacob didn't even wanted to think of.
-I asked if you're still a virgin, you know with the whole imprinting thing...
The shifter stared at his friend mouth open in disbelief; the topic, brought by her as if she were asking how he'd been, was uncomfortable enough, without adding the fact that Jacob now thought of Bella more as a sister than anything else, it was in one word, weird.
-So?-She pressed again completely aware of her friend's discomfort; she wasn't being mean, nor nosy, all she wanted was to approach the imprint topic, without edging Jacob to a defensive stance. It was a touchy subject, that according to what she had talked with Emily, almost no one from the pack wanted to touch, though Emily hadn't said why.
And of course, she did it for Edward too.
-Bella... wh-a... you shouldn't...it's...arghh!
Bella smiled at her friend innocently, it was time for the big question.
-You haven't imprinted yet.
But it came more as an statement. Jacob sighed turning to look at Bella with that calmness that still astounded her.
-You're going to make me walk away.
He said as a warning, Bella's smile just grew, becoming more sincere at the next thought.
-No you won't.
He smiled in return falling back in the bed, on the spot he had been previously occupying next to her, before she had started making weird and uncomfortable questions.
Silence fell over them, comfortable without pressure or incommodity, the kind of silence that only can happen between real friends
.
-I try very hard not to.-Jacob said after a while, still staring at the ceiling, Bella's head almost resting on his chest, turned to look at him.
-What? Being a virgin or imprinting?-Jacob laughed, that laughter that could fill any cold space. The laughter that she wanted for Edward.
-Both-He said, laughing again at the frown upon Bella's face.
-I may look like one, but I'm not a kid anymore, nor a priest. And since I'm not looking forward to enslaving myself to some random person, I decided to just enjoy life.
-Enslaving? You mean imprinting? Jake, I thought it was the sacrest thing for the shifters, you really don't want to?
Jacob sighed, wanting to get out of the room, he didn't feel like talking over his perspective of imprinting with Bella, it was hard enough every time he had to go over it with Sam, and he knew that with Bella it would be no different.
Because she was a good friend, who didn't want to see him alone.
-I've seen many ways of the imprinting, Bella. Sam and Emily, Jonas and Renesmee, are the happy examples, were love goes both ways; but there are cases that don't go so well. I've seen friends dying because their imprinted rejected them, or heart broken because even if they get to establish a relationship with their soul mate, the imprinting is a stupid bond that goes just one way, tying us to the other person, linking and bonding us forever. You can't walk out of them, but they can walk out of you. It's just to risky, and I don't thing is worth it.
There it was, when Bella listened to Jacob talk like that, she remember how old his friend truly was, and how life had changed him.
-And how do you avoid it then? I thought it was something that happen with out knowing or planning it.
Jacob stood up offering his hand to Bella.
-Easy, you just don't stay long in any place and avoid looking at people really closely. Your husband is here.
Just as the words had left his mouth Emmett and Edward's voices echoed downstairs.
She felt sad, not for her, but for Edward. She had never imagined what kind of man was now Jacob, or his reticence towards love. But seeing it from his point of view, she guessed she would probably feel the same way.
Imprinting had sound so romantic at the beginning, but she had never met a shifter whose bond had gone wrong, Jacob apparently had, and at hearing him talk about it, she could empathize with his friend.
To give your heart over and being completely defenceless. Was love worth the risk?
Bella squeezed Jacob’s hand.
“Not any love, Edward’s love”
They went downstairs, to find Edward and Emmett talking about cars in the living room. Emmett turned when he heard them, a smile adorning his handsome face.
-I think I saw a pretty doggie- Emmett said as he came forward to hug Jacob.
-And I smelled cheap perfume-Was the shifter answer with no heat in his words, after returning the hug. Emmet laughed squeezing Jacob's shoulders.
-You're staying, right? Esme would love to cook for you.
He said it more as an order than a request, Jacob smiled fondly at his friend, and , long ago, partner in crime.
-Sure, sure- Answered the wolf, smiling. Esme had been the only one who had accepted him when he had came to live with them all those years ago, so Jacob had a soft spot for her, and even if he didn't admitted out loud, he had missed her.
Jacob turned to look at Bella and Edward, who were sharing a strange look, he knew they were probably mind talking, but he let it pass. It wasn’t his place to meddle.
In reality it had been an improvised family dinner, or so the Cullen family had said.
It had started with Renesmee and her husband coming to say their goodbyes, since they were living on their honeymoon. Sam and Emily had shown too, as a request from their son, with Seth, Embry, Quil, Paul and Leah. It never ceased to amaze Jacob how this two families, who were supposed to hate, had overlooked nature's plans and embrace each other. But maybe it was Nessie and Jonas doing.
-It was really you, if I remember correctly.-Edward's voice snapped him out of his reverie, putting his forgotten mind shield in place again.
Edward frowned deeply at that, he didn’t like how the wolf now seemed to shield his every thought to him, when in other times they had engaged over some interesting mind conversations.
-After all these years of over passing our differences, I feel offended that you do that- Jacob actually looked sorry.-You know I mean no harm.
-I know, I’m sorry, I can’t help it, I guess, it has come a natural part of me.
Edward didn’t ask more, he knew part of Jacob’s life, a big part, was still unknown to him, that things would have to come slowly, and If he was meant to build a relationship with Jacob, as Bella was proclaiming, he would have to do it slow, in order not to scare the other boy... man.
While Esme had been cooking for Jacob and the rest of the pack, Bella had told Edward of what she had found out till so far.
And it displeased the vampire immensely.
Jacob had lived a life apart from them, when it shouldn’t have happened, and had learned things, the wrong way apparently.
Jacob turned to look at him, opening his mouth to say something, but the body of Seth crashing against his own, stopped him. Emmett’s own cry of battle was the only warning Edward got for himself, before being dragged into the wrestling match.
Edward didn’t know what or how it happened, Emmet and he were playfully wrestling the “pups”, as his brother used to call them, and the next moment his was pinning Jacob’s warm and incredibly soft form beneath him.
Jacob’s laughed died when he realized the position he was in, he turned to look at Edward.
Time stopped right there.
The two locked gazes and Edward felt the burn for the other, like he had never felt before in his mortal and immortal life. A need that went beyond his understanding, lust, care, possessiveness, and even love.
And the fire, erasing every trace of sadness that could be there before, rose up in Jacob’s eyes, meeting him with equal force in his emotions.
Silence fell upon the room and over the other occupants, the air grew thick with tension, and something else that Edward couldn’t identify right away.
A growl came out of Jacob, and Edward was surprised to actually understand what it meant, the shifter wanted him off. The vampire smirked, a challenge, and he was ready to meet it. There was no more warning than that, before the shifter started to really attack him.
Edward didn’t knew what came over him, his veins actually boiling, not with blood, but with the need to submit, dominate the slightly smaller form pinned beneath him.
He could hear the distant yells, but didn’t recognize the owner of the voices, his whole body was concentrated in keeping Jacob in the position he was. The shifter felt himself at disadvantage, and it made him fight harder to win the upper hand.
The vampire inside Edward, knew that all he needed was a clear view of the others neck, and he would have won the fight, but the wolf seemed to be aware of the same, and didn’t stop trashing. His body temperature grew, and Edward knew he was about to phase.
And he didn’t care.
But before he could do anything else, Edward felt hands prying them apart, and found himself looking at a very, very angry Jacob Black.
Bella’s voice, was the one to finally reach his senses.
-Edward stop!! You’re about to hurt each other!!- And that made the boy in front of him growl again. Sam and Paul were holding their friend, who was fighting hard to get out of their grasp and return to the unexpected fight that had developed between him and the vampire.
-Like he hold a chance against me- He answered with a smirk, and Jacob’s heated glance aroused him like an aphrodisiac.
Somewhere deep in his mind he knew something big was happening between them, and for the first time in his long unnatural life, Edward didn’t want to think things through, all he wanted was to take it to the last consequences, and he knew the shifter wanted the same, he had felt it in the others body, in the way he had moved, and even the way he had growled at Edward: Jacob had met his challenge with equal force and passion.
-I can take you anywhere, anytime in any form leech!- Spat Jacob at him, and then it was Edward struggling against Emmett and Carlise’s hold, at Jacob’s blood call.
-STOP IT EDWARD!!!- Carlise commanding voice resound in the room, hardly containing his son in the process.
Jacob seemed to calm down too. Sam took his opportunity, turning to Paul.
-Take him to the reservation, back to your place, take Embry and Quil with you, and by no means let him out or anyone inside. Understood?
Paul nodded. And pulled Jacob towards him, having to hold him by the waist in order to make his hold strong enough.
The movement didn’t go unnoticed by the vampire who growled at Paul.
-Move back, mutt.
Silence made itself present again.
Paul raised an eyebrow, choosing not to answer the comment, Jacob growled back, and Sam shook his head.
-You have to let him go, Edward, let me find what happened here-Sam told him, with the authority and appeasing qualities of a leader, while pushing Paul and a very stunned Jacob towards the door.
Alice reached to touch Edward’s arm, placing her little hand over his brother’s arm.
-Ed, what happened? Are you ok?
The elder vampire couldn’t answer, the low, threatening growl that was emitting Jacob cut him.
-Step away from him, Alice- Ordered Carlise, his eyes never leaving Jacob, with a mixture of amazement and curiosity in his gaze. Edward, turned to look at his sire, and by the expression on his face, something had clicked, and probably he would have the answer to what had happened here. His curiosity was enough to control the beast that suddenly seamed to have been unleashed by Jacob, enough to calm himself down, and very slowly push Alice away from him, enough to appease Jacob, and let himself be guided by his friends. Away.
Away from him.
-Do what you have to, but I won’t wait much longer- Edward said looking directly at Sam, who even with the threat that Edward was giving him, looked quite amused.
-I know, if what I suspect is true, I know you won’t. I’ll talk to you later.
The pack cleared the house, in the stealthy, graceful way of them, regarding them with doubtful, confused glances. Edward’s eyes never leaving Jacob’s noble form, he was barely outdoors when he phased, merging with the nature that surrounded him.
Not for the first time, Edward wondered why vampires were considered beautiful, when every time he saw this beings become one with nature, and move through the forest as a part of it, always left him breathless… sort of speaking.
The bronze haired vampire turned to look at his sire, a questioning look in his eyes. Carlise gaze softened when he locked eyes with his preferito, at finding the undeniable need there. A need he had never seen in Edward’s eyes, or any other vampire in a long time.
Carlise put his hand on his son shoulder, turning to look at the rest of his family, and then placing his eyes on Edward.
-You know what happened- Said the Edward. Carlise smile broadened, because he was the sire and older of this coven, and therefore knew many things about every member of his family.
-I think you may have reach what just one of our kind did.
-A slow death from a pack of rabid smelly dogs?- Said Rosalie from behind Emmett.
Carlise soft musical laughter echoed through the room reflecting the joy he felt at the discovery made that night.
-I think son- He said looking directly at Edward- You may have found your vincolo della vita.
