"...there was a certain kind of peer pressure at wesleyan which was to have a strong relationship with the avant garde. and that translated into trying to be as post-modern as we could in everything we did, you know, walking on the outside of the stairs, you know, if someone would find some piece of pipe on the ground, they'd say 'it's not a pipe, it's a musical instrument!' you know, and, 'that's not a bag, it's a shirt!' even eating your food, you know, 'these aren't peas, this is a pea-man!' there were all these levels of genius, and it was really relentless, actually. every moment of your day was spent trying to turn something into something, you know, to create something out of something, but there was one woman who really inspired us, she did wonderful stuff. conceptual post-modern artist. we thought she was... brilliant. she did a piece where she sat, and the audience would cut pieces of her clothing off... and we just thought that was... brilliant. we would try to do things like that and a friend of mine did a piece that was um, he just said, 'i dont know what's supposed to happen there, but it should be yellow. just wear yellow, and and when i point, you do something, and you be in yellow, and um, when i point,' so, this yellow person did something -- this was an outdoor piece -- and then this yellow person did something, and then a yellow school bus passed, and we said 'oh... it's brilliant. what is art? who am i?'"
