Confidential emails between FEMA Director Michael Brown and his aides reveal that he was more concerned with his appearance than he was with helping those whose lives were being destroyed at that very moment by Hurricane Katrina. After his public affairs deputy complimented him by email on a suit he wore during a television appearance, he responded during the worst of the storm: "I got it at Nordstrom's. Are you proud of me? After losing the New Hampshire primary in 2000, George W. Bush headed for South Carolina. AS a venue for a speech on "compassionate conservatism" he chose Bob Jones University, whose founder was on record for calling Catholicism "satanic" and where interracial dating was forbidden. Throughout his presidency, Bush has used his power of the photo op to conceal what he's really up to. He posed at two national parks in one week while cutting environmental programs. He posed with police officers in Philadelphia as his budget proposed a 17 percent cut in federal support for police salaries. He posed with various Boys and Girls Clubs as their budgets were slashed. As Frank Rich, in his book The Greatest Story Ever Sold, observed, "Now a smiling Bush appearance to bless any cause, program, or habitat was tantamount to a visit from the angel of death."
