On May 11, 2005, a small single-engine plane flown by a student pilot veered off course intp restricted airspace over Washington, D.C. A dramatic chase by a Black Hawk helicopter and two fighter jets ended when the pilot finally acknowledged his mistake and landed. Though it turned out to be an innocent navigation error, it prompted panicked evacuations of the Capitol, the Supreme Court, and the White House, from where Vice President Cheney was swept away to an undisclosed safe location. President Bush was elsewhere, bicycling in Maryland, and was not told about the incident until nearly an hour after it was over.
