Kenneth Tomlinson--a well-connected Republican appointed by Bush in 2001 as chairman of the board of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting--pursued what he perceived as liberal bias at NPR and PBS by monitoring suspect shows for "balance" and by starting conservative news shows like one based on the notoriously far right views of the Wall Street Journal. Tomlinson was forced, however, to resign from CPB after he was found to have misused public funds. A simultaneous appointment to the body that oversees Voice of America had also not gone smoothly: He's been accused of running a horse racing business from his office there.
