Zhu Hai

I just noticed I am no longer being blocked from using Livejournal.  This past weekend I went to a place called Zhu de haiyang (竹的海洋) or Ocean of Bamboo.  Its an area about an hour outside of Yi Xing (宜兴).

I stayed in a village called Zhu Hai(竹海新村).  Everything there was new they were still building houses and mixing cement.  There is a new park nearby so they might have been relocated if the old village was inside the park.  I stayed over night in a house in this village .  In the morning I received the tip that I didn't need to pay the admission to the park to see the bamboo.  Instead I could start hiking in any of the hills in the surrounding area to see the bamboo.

This is me walking up a logging road into one of the hills.

I found a washed out dam along the road.  It still worked a little bit but the reservoir behind it was diminished.

I saw a butterfly.  It is a little out of focus.  This is one of the few places in China that I have seen animals.  There were many different kinds of insects that I have never seen.  One I mistook for a humming bird until I realized that was impossible.  When I did get a good look at the bug it had the same body shape of a humming bird, it was about the same size, and it could hover and fly backwards.  The only difference was instead of a beak that insect had a long proboscis.  I also saw a skink, many spiders, and some weird birds.

I saw 2 old men living and working in the forest.  A nice one and a mean one.  This is the mean one who told me to get away from his trees.  The other one told me how to find the roads so I wouldn't get lost.  Each tree has been claimed by someone and they have written their name on the their particular tree.  I think it would be impossible for me to steal his tree and sell it in the village because he wrote his name on all the trees in the area.

After I got past the mean old man with the help of the nice old man I was able to get off the road and take a stroll under the canopy.

I stumbled across this formation as I was climbing down the mountain.  Green/Brown divided by a line of stones.

The mystery wasn't resolved until I stumbled on these mounds of stone scattered around the brown area.  It turns out the brown area is a cemetery.  I probably shouldn't have taken the photo as I heard Chinese ghosts are particularly nasty but I decided to include it for the sake of being complete.

Finally I went home.  On the way back I snapped a picture of the park I never went to.  I had a great time hiking in the hills unless you have a need to ride in a golf cart hiking in one of the many hills in this area is probably just as if not more enjoyable than the park.
