last night i left work at 4:30 to go up to lansing for the twilight 5k. just as i drove past marshall, a weather announcement came over the radio saying there was a tornado warning just south of marshall. i got a little freaked out, because the sky was that eerie orange/gray stormy color, but i figured i might as well keep driving north. when i got near lansing, i looked up and saw huge, dark, clouds swirling around each other. that REALLY freaked me out, and i was afraid i was going to be like one of the victims from "twister," just watching the storm until it swoops up my car. i made it to lansing and parked at impressions 5 around 6pm. i picked up my race number, and went for a jog down the river trail. i did some pick-ups and stretching, then walked around with the rest of the runners until the race started at 7pm. it felt like a much harder race than my 10k two weeks ago, which makes sense because i haven't really been able to train much because of the tendonitis (which has mostly gone away as of right now).
i think my splits were 8:30, 18:40 (10:10 mile), and 29:46 (11:06 mile). i'm a little disappointed with my time, but at least i beat my goal of 30 minutes. just before the 1.5 mile turn around, we had to cross the steep bridge right before potter park zoo, which seemed nearly impossible, going both up and down (since it was wet and slippery, you couldn't really speed up at all going down the bridge). i honestly did try to push myself more and more, but it was hot and muggy and i'm out of training, so i could only physically push myself so far. in the last 200 meters i was trying to use my kick to get past an older man, and he really raced me the last 100 meters. i barely beat him into the finishing shoot, and as i left the shoot i actually felt like i might pass out. i used all my will power to not lay down on the ground, and tried to drink some water. after i walked around and drank some water for a few minutes, i started to feel better, thankfully. then it started downpouring, so i left and drove over to the ymca and used their locker rooms for a hot shower.
after that, i drove to matt and justin's new place off of coolidge, which is a really nice, spacious apartment, perfect for hockey parties next year. ;) i got to see justin's shaved head, and it was quite a sight, haha. matt and i went bowling with some of his math friends, and i bowled a 123 and 130 and had a lot of fun. then we went to woody's and it was alright, but we were with a lot of people and it was pretty loud, so we left around midnight.
this weekend i'm going to the beach with the coldwater kids, which should be a good time and a nice blast from the past. :)
