Africa: Themed post: kids!

Nov 29, 2007 18:08

So, in the beginning, I was pretty damn shy about taking pictures of people. So I took pictures of children. Kids are stoked to see you, in the area of Ghana that we were in - they'd take off running after you when we went by on scooters - if we were walking around, there might be four or five of them just sort of ... trailing along a hundred yards back. They call out to you all the time.

I dug that. I dig kids - kids crack me up and vice versa. We get along. So between all of these factors, I have a ton of pictures of kids. Hence, a separate post. Some of these are my very favorite pictures that I took in Ghana.

Hands down, one of my favorite pictures I took.

This is a school. You can see the kids sitting at their desks, through the wood.

These were my little rug rags - they lived in the same compound and followed me around every time I was outdoors. The little girl was my favorite - her name is Naki.

These kids thought I was just about the funniest thing ever.

These kids we called, unflatteringly, the Shit Kids. They were probably related to the toilet ladies, and they hung out in front of the public toilets all day and washed laundry. They were cute, but it was really disconcerting to get swarmed by kids every time you want to go pee.

Heh, these next three pictures require a bit of explanation. We were on our way down to the slave castle in Pramrpram, and we saw a whole group of women and kids sitting around in the fishing village. Esi and I were walking together - she hugely pregnant, me nonathletic and suffering from heat stroke - and she said, "You should go take pictures of those people. Let's go ask them." So we shuffled over, and they were more than happy to comply - hauling their babies out in front of me so that I could take a picture. I've mentioned this in other posts, but the biggest difference we saw out there wasn't in have vs. have not, but in education - ruling things like bathroom hygiene, manners, belief in medicine (vs. juju) and, as you can see in these pictures, whether or not these kids had ever seen a white person or a camera before. They look freaking terrified. Heh.

I LOVE this picture.

**gigglesnort** Seriously. Terrified.

Naki, trying on the scooter helment.

Man, look at the attitude on that kid! It's just awesome.

The last picture I took in Africa. That kid was following me around, getting in my other shots, so I turned around and took a picture of her directly. As soon as the flash went, she squealed and ran away, which was ... generally the reaction I got, taking these pictures.

Yay! There'll be one or two more themed photo posts - at least you don't have to listen to me blather, just look at the pretty pictures. I might do one on cool building shots, maybe one on the random stuff I took pictures of ... I've saved all my artsy, fun shots for last :D.
