King Cake: The Result

Mar 09, 2011 11:53

As stated in my previous post, I had found a recipe for King Cake that even I couldn't mess up. Now, I give you, the finished result.

BEHOLD, THE GLORY!

Considering I had no idea what I was doing, I think it turned out pretty nice. It's not the most beautiful King Cake I've ever seen, but it made up for it in deliciousness. Oh, and that little guy in the middle? I didn't have a plastic baby Jesus to put inside the cake, so that little guy took his place. Those two are pretty similar, right? haha

Judging by the reactions of the family that came over to eat it, I would say it was a success. And seeing as how I ate 3 pieces of it on my own.... yeah... it was good.

Now, I know you're all waiting on pins and needles wondering how I accomplished such wonderment. I will tell you my secret: Pilsbury Hot Roll Mix. Yeah, you buy it in the baking section of your grocery store, and you follow the instructions for cinnamon rolls except you make it ring shaped. I also made a cream cheese filling that I put in the middle using this recipe:

8 oz cream cheese
1/3 cup sugar
1 teaspoon lemon juice
1 egg

That made it even tastier. Once the filling is in there, you fold the dough over to cover it all up. After you bake it, then, you make a glaze with powdered sugar and milk to put on top--about a cup of powdered sugar to 3 tbsp of milk. The colored stuff is just sugar that I dyed with food coloring and sprinkled on top.

The King Cake was super moist. When I bought a King Cake at Wal-Mart or at a bakery in a place other than Louisiana, it was too dry and gross. This one was perfect.

Thanks SO much to my neighbor Tracy who posted this on her facebook. She just doesn't know the joy she brought to me. I'm so excited to finally fulfill my craving for King Cake every year. :)
