If he sets a rule, it's a rule. I don't think it was ever a secret that Professor Archer didn't tolerate whispering during his class.

I think Professor Sprout will understand. It's not as if you got more than one detention.

There have been plenty of professors who don't allow talking in their class. Just because you haven't gotten caught before doesn't make it unreasonable.

They usually ignore talking until they offically started with a very clear and loud greeting.
Why do you think Professor Snape made always such an entry? Everyone shut up when the door banged shut.

I don't think it's the professor's obligation to make sure that we all know to shut up and be good little boys and girls. We are all adults, last time I checked, and part of adulthood means acting the part.
