I knew beforehand that the career fair wouldn't have much for me. I'm a specialist, and most of the open positions or internships were for generalists. The few that were for specialists were in different fields than mine, like computer programming or mechanical engineering. So I knew I wasn't likely to get much in the way of employment opportunities, and didn't go in looking for those. Okay, I did talk to a few government employees who said they weren't recruiting for information positions at this time but worked in departments where my skills would be useful, and told me where to apply online for that. So I'll set up an account with those job agencies in a day or two.
Mostly, I went for the swag. I passed over post-it notes and highlighters to get the full-sized bags of M&Ms and hand sanitizers and a kit with a miniature stapler, tape dispenser, and pair of scissors. I chatted here and there, was polite and coureous, and had a reasonably good time. Also, I got a free lunch from a buffet I wasn't supposed to have access to by walking over like I was supposed to be there.
It's too late to head to a museum, but it's bright and sunny out, so I'll change my shirt and head to the park for a walk.
For everything that goes wrong in it, this is still a beautiful world. Everybody, take care of yourselves out there.
