ye gads! i'm sorry for the dearth in accounts of what's been happening at nutwood central these past few weeks. it's certainly not because i haven't been doing things... it's just that i opted for the paper journal instead. today was highly eventful but i think i'll leave it for the next post when i'll have gathered all the proper photographic evidence to make it a decent illustration of the day's events.
i'll try not to bore you with the minutiae of my days. just highlights.

my co-workers and i witnessed "the flight of the sandal" (my sandal, to be exact. see my crummy drawing of the spectacle
here... and
here.

went to the 40th annual college libtech gathering and had a good time hiding in the corner with the alumni from my graduation year. b--,
cliomuse,
lady_ofthelake and d-- who was finally back from working in the united arab emirates. we took a good long look at his pictures and, since only light snacks were offered, we went off to white spot for a proper meal and talked about all things librarical.
sept. 16
there was a bottle drive that morning and i discovered tasma is a good guard cat. when she heard the people outside collecting the bottles, she went to the door, puffed up and hissed. any burglars that attempt to rob us
now had better watch out!
played the role of tourist in our own city with my friends (
cliomuse, t----- and j-----). went to the planetarium, learned all sorts of spacey things and touched a rock brought back from the moon. then we walked over to granville island, looked about in the new-agey stores, and had fun in the kids only market. we ate lunch and took a ride (my first!) on the false creek ferry back to the planetarium.
sept. 17
visited with
fizz_bubbles whom i haven't seen for about a year and a half. we caught up over lunch (served to us by a fellow semi alumnus that didn't recognize us). unfortunately, she's in university right now and i probably won't see her for another half year at the earliest.
it felt rather strange when she mentioned that her pastor has read (reads) this journal. kinda makes me wonder who else is "lurking" out there?
sept. 20
my co-worker, r------ was not feeling well. a----- and i were both talking with her at her desk. i proposed that we fill in one of the "quarantine" shipping labels she had on her desk and stick it on her. a----- agreed and started filling it out. she stopped to ask r----- what she should put in the "use" field and r----- suggested in a congested voice: "less"
a good laugh was had by all.

went thrift store shopping after work and found an unbelievable amount of good stuff for my hallowe'en costume (among other things). my paperboy costume is nearly complete (just need to make myself a newspaper and buy some long stockings). i also found some pants for the winter and a wonderful vintage 40s-style black dress with small ivory polka dots all over it (and there was much rejoicing).
sept. 22
had a really good dream before i got up in the morning (much better than the invasive dreams i had been having most of the summer).
that evening i got together with my libtech friends and we had supper at the e&c. lots of chatting about library issues was had again. we then went back to my place and played settlers of catan and i won (a rare feat! especially when playing against
cliomuse's husband).
sept. 23
after some shopping at the used book store and thrift store with
lady_ofthelake i went home to three hours of weed pulling. s----- and j-- came home and proposed we go to ocean park pizza. so we went.
the place is rather popular and we were told that we had a 40 minute wait. no sweat, why not visit the old haunts? behind the restaurant and a few houses down, was the path to the "fun fun park" (i'm sure it has another name, but i only remember what we used to call it as children). before we reached the park, i predicted the old wooden structures wouldn't be there anymore. i was most unfortunately right. in their stead was a dull plastic and coloured metal structure and some springy animal rockers graffitied with various tags and male genitalia.
apparently, the barber pole rocking device, lever-powered diggers, water fountain and wooden fort were all deemed "not child-friendly". well, they were friendly enough for me as a child. it was the bugs that were nasty.
i was about 3 or 4 years old playing by the ersatz water fountain that was spurting water constantly. there was a film of water around it -- enough to lure me barefoot into its cooling waters on a bright sunny day. i splashed about for a while and then stepped on a floundering wasp. its barb found the soft sole of my foot and i screamed. the rest was rather blurry but i remember ending up at home on a stool in the kitchen by the entrance to the dining room. my stung foot was in a metal bucket of cold water and, though it still hurt, i was rather bored of sitting around doing nothing.

listened to
the decemberists on kcrw's morning becomes eclectic.
i much enjoy "the island, come and see, the landlord's daughter, you'll not feel the drowning". can't wait to hold the album in my hot little hands!

work suddenly becomes fairly stressful starting on this day. with a new quarter and new projects to plan, it looks like i'm going to be in an all-consuming state of urgency and panic until the bitter end with the release that comes from the Christmas break. oh fun! still, during one of these planning meetings, my manager mentioned in passing that certain activities would continue when d------ came back from her holidays in january. (the last i heard, she wouldn't be coming back in the new year). after the meeting, i asked d------ about this and, apparently, the situation has taken a turn for the better. my manager was quick enough to tell me d------ wouldn't be coming back in the new year, but it seems she took her time to let me know she would, in fact, be staying. (hmmmm...)
that evening i finally got myself hooked up with a church homegroup in my area and went to it after work. i haven't been to a bible study since i was in high school always citing that i didn't have good transportation to get to a study (pre-fenny) and that i had way too much schoolwork. i don't have those excuses anymore and i realize that i really ought to hang out with more people that share my faith and finally get to know some people in the church i've attended for three years. so... unlike the bible studies i've attended in the past, this one has only five members (there were three of us on wednesday), the study is rather unstructured (conversation is allowed to flow, tangents are permitted), the others, like myself, are shy pray-ers (we don't speak to God out loud very well in front of people and we don't use flowery adjectives) and there's a 10-month-old kid running/crawling around. i will definitely attend again!

so... if you waded through all that news and actually managed to get to the bottom of this page, i give you this:
