So, Gustav looks like it's going to make landfall in Louisiana on my birthday. And there's a "Hanna" floating around in the Carribean as well.
Of course I've been watching the hurricane coverage as much as possible. It's awful to see the destruction (and neglect by the government) in Haiti. Cuba looks like they made the best of an awful situation and I'm hoping that zero death toll stays that way.
Though there are a couple things I'd rather seen done differently, overall I'm pleased with the Louisiana evacuation area. A lot of what I shrieked about with Katrina seems to be being done differently this time. I was especially pleased to see efforts made to evacuate pets as well. It was a high cost to learn some common sense lessons but I'm glad to see those lessons making an impact at least.
Still...twice in three years...it's just awful. I'm just hoping it doesn't strengthen any further.

A question for you guys...What do you think are the best charities to donate to post-Gustav? Of course there's the Red Cross and other well known ones but there are also smaller charities (particularly local ones) which do amazing work and get overlooked a lot. Any thoughts?

Otherwise...people on the gulf coast and with family there, you'll be in my thoughts tonight. I know that only means so much but it's all I can do. In my mind I'm hugging you all.
birthday,
