Regarding chickens, in particular hens:
"It is a natural part of poultry behavior for hens to establish a social hierarchy by pecking each other. All the other birds may sometimes excessively attack an injured or weak bird and a bird exhibiting a bleeding area is particularly likely to attract attack. It may be pecked to death if not rescued."

Beyond that, thank you everyone who said such kind things to me. It is helpful to be able to look at that right now. Even if I think a lot of you hold too high an opinion of me, it makes me smile.
I'm reminded that one good thing I can say about myself is that I have wonderful taste in friends.
