Aftermath of yesterday's tornadoes in Southeast VA...

This area does not get major tornadoes. We get the occasional small one or a water spout but nothing like this.
At least 200 people were injured--Some news sources say there was one fatality, others none. Of course there are no damage estimates yet in monetary terms.
My nerves are a little frazzled over this (like they weren't already)--Rob called me at 5:00 yesterday saying that he was in Suffolk and had seen a water spout. I assumed it was just the usual thing. He actually pointed out to me on one of the aerial photos of the damage, where it was when it happened. He was close enough to see insulation flying around and stuff. Of course he's okay...but it's just the thought of the whole thing that gives me the shivers.

- To make a monetary donation to The Salvation Army recovery efforts, call 1-800-SAL-ARMY or send checks marked 'Suffolk Disaster Relief' to The Salvation Army, P.O. Box 1000, Suffolk, VA 23439.
- At noon today, all Farm Fresh's in Hampton Roads will be collecting financial donations for the tornado victims. They are accepting cash, checks, or credit cards. Make checks payable to Suffolk Chapter of the American Red Cross. They are not taking parishable items at this time because they do not have a place to store the items.
- Kristen Burgess owns a dance studio in northern Suffolk -- some kids and families were affected by the tornadoes. They're holding a car wash fundraiser on Saturday and plan to donate all the money to the affected families and the Red Cross... she wants us to get the word out (we could at least post it on the web I guess).Saturday, starting at 9am: 3205 Bridge Road in Suffolk, Dynamic Movements School of Performing Arts. They have a donation jar in the waiting area starting today.
- Beer Tasting: Newport News, Virginia, April 29, 2008. The St. George Brewing will host a beer tasting fundraiser for the Hampton Roads Chapter of the American Red Cross. Another will be held on Saturday, May 3 from 1 to 4 pm., at St. George Brewing Company, 204 Challenger Way, Hampton. The cost is $10 and entitles each attendee to three (3) six ounce samples. Additional six-ounce samples can be purchased for $2 each. The proceeds from the event help the Red Cross respond to the needs of the people it serves in Hampton, Newport News, and the Isle of Wight County.
