This has been sitting in a file on my computer for about a year and I finally decided to bring it back out in to daylight and finish it.

Title: Beginning's End
Fandom: Resident Evil
Pairings: Chris/Jill, possible references to Claire/Steve
Rating: T
Warning: Violence and gore.
Genre: Romance, Action, Drama, Horror

Authors Note: Completely ignores more recent canon, anything set after Code Veronica. It's really just my take on what could have happened.

Beginning’s End

Chapter 1

The sound of an alarm followed them through the trees almost drowning out the footsteps that pursued them. The rain poured down around them leaving slippery ground beneath their feet, joining the tree roots in making their run more difficult. Branches and leaves blocked their view but the sound of approaching gunfire meant slowing down wasn’t an option.

“Keep it up Jill,” Carlos shouted “We’re almost to the river.”

Jill glanced back, Carlos was only a few steps behind her but the figures moving through the trees weren’t much further. Almost losing her footing she refocused her attention on where she was going, she couldn’t afford to screw up now.

“It just had to rain today,” Carlos said his voice barely audible above the rain and gunfire. Her legs ached and her lungs burned, her body’s way of protesting against the sudden work out but she pushed through it, forcing her body to keep going. Hearing a thud she looked behind her again, this time finding Carlos on the floor, probably having lost his footing. She slowed to a stop, turning around to go back for him.

“Keep going,” he shouted, halting her steps before she could even take one. He was just picking himself up from the floor when two of their pursuers emerged from the trees, a red and white umbrella on the sleeves of their uniforms. They grabbed him and Carlos struggled against them, holding his own until a third man appeared.

“Go,” he yelled, his voice cut off by the man who struck him over the head, knocking him unconscious. Jill hesitated only for a second before she turned and ran; it was up to her now. She could hear the water up ahead, was spurred on by the knowledge that her escape was close. When she emerged from the trees it was not the small raft she found but the edge of a cliff, stopping just in time to prevent herself going over the edge she peered down. They must have taken a wrong turn somewhere, not hard to do when you’re running through a forest with Umbrella operatives chasing you down.

It was a long drop, would hurt like hell when she hit the water at the bottom but it was better than being caught. She clutched the strap of her backpack tightly, she knew the disk would survive the swim; hopefully she’d survive it too. The voices from the trees behind her drew her attention, silently promising to return for Carlos she took a deep breath and dived.

Captain Almos stood on the deck of his small cargo ship staring out at the darkness that surrounded them. The moon and stars were blocked from view by the clouds and fog and without their light the ocean looked black. The only real source of light was his ship, not the safest conditions to travel in but he was no stranger to risk, not afraid of danger. The medals pinned to his dark blue jacket could attest to that, remnants of the time he’d served in the navy. Even now, six years later, he still wore them with pride; the need to look presentable had been so deeply engrained into him throughout his fifteen years of service that it had stuck with him. His clothes were creaseless, a perfect fit for him, his face was shaven and his light brown hair was short and neatly kept.

A nervous voice called for his attention and he turned his gaze from the ocean to the young man standing behind him. He held back a long suffering sigh, six years of making this tedious run, hopefully this would be the last time.

“What is it?” he questioned.

“We’ve had a leak in containment,” the young man informed him.

“Send the security team,” the captain instructed with a small smirk, hiding it almost as quickly as it had appeared.

“But, but, there’s a lot of them, we may need more...” the man stuttered his inexperience showing more in that moment than it had throughout this entire journey. Almos didn’t have the patience for him or the time.

“I said send security, if they need more men then go join them yourself,” he snapped, cutting off the young man who quickly scurried away.

Turning his gaze back to the ocean Almos could see his destination now, another ship, unmoving in the water. As they grew closer he could make out the forms of people moving around aboard the other vessel.

“Prepare to transfer cargo,” he yelled out to the few crewmen who were still on the deck. They all immediately carried out the order and Almos headed for the crew quarters. His guest would want to know they’d arrived, she had done nothing but infuriate him through this whole trip and he would be glad to see the back of her.

The bench was uncomfortable.

Of all the thoughts that should have been at the forefront of her mind at that moment, that should have been somewhere near the bottom of the list. She tried to keep her focus on her surroundings, warily watching over everything around her. Looking over her shoulder had become such a necessity now, anyone around her could be working for Umbrella, it sounded paranoid but that was her life.

Her attention was diverted to the phone, the ringing interrupting her thoughts and she stood up, ignoring the curious stare of a passer by as she answered it.

“Hello,” she answered warily, the call being fifteen minutes later than she’d been expecting.

“Miss Valentine,” Trent’s familiar voice replied, the mysterious man had made a habit of showing up with information in recent months, this time it had been an exchange, her knew where an Umbrella facility was and he wanted them to go in and get something for him. “Did you get the information?”

Jill hesitated before responding, despite his information always being accurate, if somewhat cryptic; she still knew nothing about the man. He seemed to be on their side but then she’d thought that about Wesker too. “Yeah, I got it but I lost Carlos, he was captured.”

“I’ll see what I can find out,” Trent replied. She knew it shouldn’t be that simple, no one ever gave something for nothing but she couldn’t work out what it was that he got out of helping them. She’d asked him before, all but demanded to know who he was and what he really wanted but he hadn’t told her anything, just given her another one of his annoyingly cryptic statements.

“What about your end of the deal, did you find Chris?” she questioned. Trent was silent for a moment and Jill feared the strange informant had not been able to keep his part of the bargain, that he hadn’t found Chris for her.

“I found him, he and his sister recently escaped an Umbrella facility in Antarctica, they’re staying at a hotel in Spain now,” Trent informed her and Jill sighed in relief, after over three months of searching she’d finally found him, hopefully he’d know where the rest of the team was and once they reunited they’d be able to take down Umbrella... and save Carlos.

Trent informed her of the address and much to her surprise didn’t ask for the information he’d sent her and Carlos to get, didn’t even mention it again before the line went dead. Jill frowned, hanging up the phone slowly and grabbing a piece of paper and a pen from her pocket, she scribbled down the address before she forgot it and then glanced at the phone again. Why would Trent send her and Carlos into an Umbrella facility to find information that he wasn’t even bothered about having?

It didn’t matter, she had what she needed from the call, she knew where Chris was and if she didn’t want to get there only to find he’d already moved on then she was going to have to leave soon. She’d be glad to get away from here anyway, the Umbrella facility she and Carlos had raided was only a few miles from town and they were no doubt still looking for her. She just had to hope that Trent could find information that would help her save Carlos and when he did she’d need the rest of team together to help her rescue him.

She headed back to her hotel to pack here few belongings, she’d left everything behind in Racoon city, her home and almost everything she owned would have been destroyed when the nuclear bomb hit the city. She’d only gathered a few things since then, a few changes of clothes and weapons, the latter always had to be replaced since it was impossible to get it all through airports. She was lucky she’d had a secret account, not something a former law enforcement officer should admit to but it had kept her and Carlos going over the last few months. She’d opened it shortly after the Spencer Mansion incident, somehow knowing that sooner or later she was going to need it. She daren’t touch her other accounts, Umbrella would no doubt be watching them, there didn’t seem to be anything that company couldn’t do, anything they couldn’t get away with.

Most of the time it felt like they were fighting a losing battle, Umbrella Incorporated was a highly respected international corporation. Who would suspect that they were actually conducting biological research on everything from plants to humans, creating zombies and all manner of other terrifying creatures, for that matter who would even believe it? It was Umbrella’s word against the remaining former S.T.A.R.S, since they’d been suspended and discredited by Umbrella and by their own Chief of Police and Mayor before the two of them been killed in Racoon city, their word meant very little.

They needed proof, something they could take to the press and to the authorities, something Umbrella couldn’t deny or weasel out of. Unfortunately, as much mess as Umbrella made they were damn good at cleaning it up. Viruses and Biological weapons were able to escape but any information; any evidence was locked up tight, destroyed one way or another.

Whether it was a losing battle or not it was one they had to keep fighting, there was no else who would.
