[family moment] rage against the machine...

There was something inherently satisfying about slamming the firearm down on the surface of her father’s desk.

“I’m not reckless.”

Cain glanced up with a raised eyebrow, confusion clearly visible in his scowl. “Uh…okay?”

“And I’m fucking goddamn careful.” She went on angrily, walking around the desk to stoop down into Cain’s personal space. “Since you found my ass back home? I’ve been a poster child for careful.”

“More or less, I’ll admit that much.”

“You goddamn right you will. I don’t play Chicken, I don’t antagonize demons, and I haven’t killed a single peaceful scale-monger in all the time I’ve been here. And you know what? I’m good with it, too. I used to miss the bullshit games, but I don’t anymore. I’m cool with slaying, and I’m down with my new crew.”

Cain nodded with the slow, careful precision of a man afraid of losing a limb. “That’s good to know.”

“Shit yeah, it is!” Hank was yelling now, but she didn’t care. “So you can take the gun and shove it straight up your douchebag ass, ‘cause I don’t want it! How’s that?!”

“It’s…uh…what?”

“You fucking heard me! I’m not carrying the goddamn piece tonight, and I’m not carrying it anymore, so fuck you hardcore! Only time I’m touching that fucking thing again is at the firing line, I don’t care WHAT you say!!”

Without another word, she turned and stormed out of the library, heading back up to her room. Fuck Baileigh…she was the least reckless person ever. Ever. Well, most of the time…

She was so caught up in seething, she didn’t even notice as Cain quietly put the gun away with a small, satisfied smile on his face.
