Writer's Block: Airplane reading

"If you're going on a long plane or road trip, what sort of reading materials do you bring along? Is it different from what you usually read? Will you watch a trashy movie or read a bad novel or magazines just to pass the time? "

An apt question as I will actually be flying somewhere later this month. Honestly, it depends on the time of year. During school I'll probably bring one book that I'm currently reading and then study material. Over the summer I'll take an assortment of books because you never know what you'll feel like reading. Some people bring clothes for all occasions, I bring books. Mystery, sci-fi, fantasy, poetry, classic literature, short stories, humorous stories, plays. A period is used because I'll probably bring all of the above in some form or another, usually combining at least 2 categories within one book and, of course, in regards to whatever I can fit in my luggage/carry-on without having to worry about if pages will get torn.

The last part of the question--" just to pass the time"--begs the question of "at what point are you willing to read terrible things"--THAT is me in a waiting room-- I wasn't expecting having to wait too long for one reason or another, and so I am, sadly, bookless (a side effect of hating the hassle of purses). Boredom never takes long--a room quiet as a graveyard at first dawn if not for that screaming child across the room from you, people doing their best to pretend they don't notice anything, glancing furtively over at the small child when they think no one is looking, and the still tension that serves to strain at the very foundations of social normality--the only escape is through reading material. Even if it is a 4 year old copy of National Geographic. Or, in the more desperate situations, a beauty magazine (the horror of the idea that people read those for amusement will never cease to render me speechless). In desperate times like that of the Waiting Room Syndrome or The Line, anything that involves words  will be sufficient distraction.
