Found this little ebook describing The Authentic History of Malay Pirates! The title of my post is a quote from this very ebook, by Po Adam (apparently a Rajah) to an American captain on the seas.

It was originally published in 1837, written by Charles Ellms. It is hilarious for the old mat salleh style of spelling Malay words and names.

The Ilanun is actually an indigenous tribe based in The Philippines, just like the Sulu. But I wouldn't discount the idea that the word 'lanun' is derived from this tribe.

that was what I was thinking myself. It figures that Malays would never call themselves pirates, and so would label actual piracy by their competition's name....
