Beloit College was under a precautionary lockdown on Thursday, Feb. 21, from 12:30-3:13 p.m. after learning of a situation underway at an apartment building near campus (see details below). Shortly after the “all clear” was sounded, Dean of Students Christina Klawitter distributed an email message to all students, faculty, and staff describing the situation and explaining the college’s response. The full text of that message is below.
Thursday, Feb. 21 at 4:32 p.m.
Beloit College community members:
At about 12:30 p.m. today, the college’s security office learned that an individual (who they believed to be armed) was in the vicinity of 920 Park Ave., about a block off campus. As a result of that alert, Beloit College immediately issued a voluntary lock down of the campus.
Thankfully, the suspect, who had been involved in a domestic dispute, was taken into custody by the Beloit Police at about 3:10 p.m. inside 920 Park. An 'all clear' message was then issued to the Beloit College community at 3:14 p.m.
It’s rare that we have to use our emergency alert system or respond to a situation like this, and thankfully so. And while this event disrupted normal activities around campus, we’re so appreciative of the the attention you paid to these alerts. Thank you for that.
Since this has been in the news, not to mention on social media, I want to encourage you to make contact with family and friends to update them on the situation (feel free to share this note with them, should you like).
Events like today’s can be disruptive, but also disturbing. If you need them, staff will also be available in the Residence Life Office until 7 p.m. to talk with anyone who has concerns or questions.
And if you have any questions we haven’t answered, or concerns about the way in which we handled today’s communications, please let us know. You can respond to this email or communicate with me, Jason Hughes, Bruce Heine, or John Winkelmann, all of us members of the college’s emergency communications team.
We will also hold an open forum on Monday, February 25, 3:30-4:30 in Moore Study Lounge (2nd fl Pearsons), to listen to your input and share information about our emergency procedures.
