I was extrapolating from "how a man presently treats a woman = he was raised in the same environment as that".

It was a long time ago when I read about this particular topic, but the odds of an abused child in turn abusing their own children is about 1 in 3, and I would guess about the same for generally being a jerk. However, abusers almost always do grow up in abusive homes, even if from the outside the family looks ideal.
