Canon point: Just after graduating highschool, when the Host Club heads for America to study with Haruhi.
Er, note: I’m pulling him from the anime but using the happenings of the manga to age him.
Personality: True to the double sided coin that is being a twin, there are two sides to who Kaoru is and each is etched with very careful, fine lines.
The first and most outwardly recognizable portion of Kaoru’s person is who he is when he is with his twin. The two of them grew up living in their own world-they kept everyone at a distance, except for each other-because they are identical and people have a hard time telling them apart. This caused some conflict for each of them because they wanted to be told apart and yet didn’t. They wanted to be their own, separate being and, yet, did not. So, their dislike of others (they deemed the rest of the world ‘full of idiots’ and were even a little cruel to others who tried to invade their tiny world of ‘the one who is not me is you and the one who is not you is me’ness) made other people avoid them...sort of. Until they joined The Host Club.
The twins love games and are full with mischief. Often, they treat other people as ‘toys’ and use and manipulate them for their own amusement (Which can be demonstrated in their near constant manipulation of Haruhi because flustering her amuses them as much as the rise they get out of Tamaki by doing so!). However, they’re easily bored and once the novelty of a game or a new ‘toy’ wears off, they move on. They also want what they want when they want it and if they can’t get it by simply asking for it, they will sometimes manipulate everyone around them to get it (For example, they wanted to go to Haruhi’s house and when she said no, they pretended to fight for days so that she was forced to agree to let them come over in an attempt to get them to smooth things out with each other).
They are a united front and do everything together. Since joining the Host Club they have begun to slowly expand their world outward and have been making strides (both subtly and not so subtly) in recognizing other people’s feelings and needs. But, even still, when something goes wrong, they often still turn to each other for support.
And, as a side, when they are participating in Host Club functions, Kaoru portrays the submissive party (or ‘uke’...er, if you want to take that route in labelling it) in the incestuous front he and his brother put on for show but this can sometimes be seen (or ‘bleeds out’) to a much lesser degree at other times (When they are alone or don’t have the gawking girls around to impress, especially in moments of stress). Both of the twins enjoy flirting with and teasing the girls who come to the Host Club to be entertained.
The second side of Kaoru is more subtle and usually only seen when he is away from his twin or when the two of them are alone. He’s the younger of the two but is far more mature and more aware of himself and others. He’s also much more toned down than his twin (Calmer and more prone to thinking before acting). He genuinely considers the feelings of other people and recognizes the flaws of he and his twin and others (and has, in the past, used them in his ventures into manipulating the world). That being said, his primary focus is still his twin and he goes to great lengths and puts himself aside to help foster personal growth in his brother (be it putting aside his own feelings for a girl to help his brother recognize and foster his own feelings for her or manipulating other people and situations to help Hikaru become aware of the feelings he has or an idea that will help him grow. One very good example is that, at one point, he asks Haruhi out on a date, knowing that his brother has feelings for her, and then pretends to be sick to force his brother to go. Another is pretending to be his brother in order to apologize to someone Hikaru offended).
Powers/Abilities: Kaoru doesn’t possess any superhuman abilities but he is exceptionally close to his twin (which can sometimes appear like a superhuman ability since they often finish each other’s sentences and don’t always seem to need to speak to one another to communicate thoughts) and has inherited an eye for fashion from his mother.
