Summary: Time spent together in a closet solves things between Jinki and Key.
A/N: This was written for SSS 2010 and I realised too late it has nothing to do with Christmas. Nevermind.
”Why do you have to be so clumsy all the time?” Key asked Jinki in a desperate voice, as he pushed the older boy away from the sink and started cleaning up the mess Jinki had left.
“This is the second glass you’ve broken in less than a month!” Key sounded pissed off as he collected the shards and threw them to the bin.
“It’s not like I can help it”, Jinki muttered as he leaned against the fridge door. He was feeling rather miserable as his band mate kept nagging at him about how he never managed to do anything right.
“You’re supposed to be the leader here and still I need to take care of you like this”, Key complained as he finished cleaning up and shot a glare at Jinki who shuddered under his stare.
“I just wanted to make you a cup of coffee because you said you were tired”, Jinki mumbled as he fidgeted nervously in his spot. Key stopped in middle of a rant and a small smile spread across his features.
“That’s so sweet”, Key said softly and Jinki was starting to feel hopeful that maybe the other wasn’t so angry after all. That was before Key’s eyes suddenly went wide and he seemed to realize what he was doing.
“You can’t do things like that!” Key snapped.
“Uh, I can’t make you coffee?” Jinki asked, now seriously confused.
“No! Well, what I mean is that you need to stop being so sweet”, Key told him sternly. “I hate it. And I hate your stupid wide grin and your clumsiness. The way you sing drives me crazy almost as much as your lame jokes that no one ever gets.”
All Jinki could do was stand there open mouthed. He wanted to leave and lock himself in his room forever but he couldn’t move. He wanted to be angry and shout at the other but he just felt hurt as he stood there wordless.
“I’m sorry”, Jinki whispered when his body finally started to co-operate. Key had his back turned to Jinki and he could see the way the other tensed, shoulders rising and head lowering a bit.
“Just leave”. Key’s voice was quiet and Jinki realized he had preferred the shouting. The coldness and calmness felt even worse making Jinki feel nauseous as he turned and walked into his room.
As soon as the door slammed closed behind him Jinki slumped against it. He felt like crying but the tears didn’t come. He sat there knees drawn close to his body and his arms hugging his legs. An unexpected knock on the door made Jinki crawl further away. He was still sitting on the floor as Minho stepped in without waiting for an answer.
“Hyung, there’s a chair in your room”, Minho said softly as he gripped Jinki’s arm and hauled him up.
“It was too far away”. Jinki gave a weak smile as he walked into his bed and sat down, Minho following him.
“You and Key fought again”. It wasn’t a question. Jinki turned his head away but he could feel Minho’s gaze on him. The younger boy put his arm around Jinki and pulled him closer.
“What was it all about?” Minho asked quietly.
“Key told me he hates me.” Jinki spoke the words before he was able to stop himself. Minho shifted next to him and lifted his chin so that their eyes met.
“Of course he doesn’t hate you”, Minho told him pointedly while shaking his head.
“He sure does know how to act like he does”, Jinki sighed and leaned closer to rest his head against Minho’s shoulder.
“He’s just having one of his fits, he’ll be back to normal in no time”, Minho reassured Jinki who wanted to believe his words. It was just hard as his mind kept playing the scene over and over.
Things did get a bit better during the next week. They were still awkward around each other but Key wouldn’t snap at him constantly. They were mostly acting like strangers, talking about how warm it was and what they should eat for dinner. Everyone noticed something was wrong and Jinki knew Jonghyun tried to talk about it with Key, with no success.
It was the first day of their week long holiday and Jinki walked into the living room yawning. He was only wearing his boxers because seriously it was way too hot to wear anything else. Key was sitting on the couch watching TV and raised his gaze to see who was interrupting his peaceful moment. His mouth fell open when he saw Jinki and the younger boy blushed as he shut his eyes tightly.
“Christ hyung, put on some clothes!” Key nearly shrieked.
“But it’s too hot!” Jinki protested as he crossed his arms as if to shield himself.
“I don’t care”, Key muttered. He had his eyes open now but he was looking everywhere but at Jinki. Key looked absolutely uncomfortable as he kept shifting in his spot and refused to meet Jinki’s eyes.
Jinki sighed as he turned to walk back to his room to obey Key’s command. He wasn’t about to get into another argument if it could be avoided. When he was in his room he faced the mirror and let his eyes wander down his body. Jinki felt depressed. He knew he wasn’t beautiful like Taemin or ridiculously good-looking like Minho but he hadn’t thought he was that bad to look at.
“I shouldn’t let it get to me”, Jinki said to himself but it was hard. It was hard because he was so stupidly in love with Key. With his dongsaeng who suddenly seemed to despise everything that was Jinki.
“Have you seen my new black trousers?” Jonghyun asked as he rushed into the room with just a towel hanging around his waist.
“Ask Key, he always knows where all the stuff is”, Jinki offered as he went through his drawers.
“I already did”, Jonghyun sighed and looked around as if his missing trousers would be hidden somewhere in Jinki’s room.
“Did Key command you to put on some clothes?” Jinki asked hopefully. Maybe Key just had suddenly created a problem with half naked people in general.
“Um, no”, Jonghyun answered and furrowed his brow. “Why would he do that?”
“No reason”, Jinki muttered. So Key only had a problem with him then. Wasn’t that just perfect. Key didn’t only think he was an idiot, he also found him disgusting.
Later that night everybody else was out shopping for food and that left Jinki and Key alone for some time. Jinki decided they needed to talk things trough. They were the umma and appa of their group, if they fought it affected everyone. Jinki tried to search for right words to say as he wandered around the apartment to find Key. He spotted the younger boy in their cleaning closet, back turned to Jinki.
“What are you looking for?” Jinki asked as he walked closer, making Key jump around in surprise.
“Stop creeping”, Key snapped and Jinki gave him an apologetic smile.
“I’m trying to find that one small duster but I’m pretty sure Taemin has stole it because he’s a brat like that”, Key supplied Jinki as he went back to turning the small room upside down.
“You mean this one?” Jinki asked as he crouched to pick up a purple duster that was lying on the floor under the door.
“No don’t”, was all Key managed to say before Jinki pulled the duster free which resulted in the door hitting Jinki in the back and making him collide with Key, the crash sending them sprawled on the floor. The door swung shut with a loud bang and a complete darkness surrounded them.
“You idiot!” Key hissed as he tried to push Jinki away from him. “That duster was holding the door open!”
“Ups”, Jinki muttered. So much for settling everything with Key. He was lucky if the other boy wouldn’t kill him right there and then. Jinki got up and tried not to hurt Key in the progress and turned the door knob to give them more room but to his horror the door stayed closed.
“Um, the door’s locked”, Jinki announced.
“I know that! That’s why I put the damn duster there”, Key snorted and was Jinki just imagining it or did he sound a little panicky?
“Okay so let me just put on the lights and I’ll try to find a way to get us out of here”, Jinki tried to calm him and groped around to find the light switch.
“You can’t because Minho didn’t change the light bulb even though I asked him to.” Now Key really sounded like he would have a fit. “We’re locked in this small room and there’s no light and oh god we’re going to die”.
Jinki was about to ask what the heck was wrong with the younger boy but then he remembered. Key had claustrophobia. Jinki was pretty sure that someone up there hated him with all their heart.
“Just relax Key, we’re not going to die”, Jinki tried to sound as reassuring as possible. “Others will be here soon and they will let us out”.
“We’re going to suffocate before that and it’s all your fault!” Key sobbed. Jinki was almost happy he couldn’t see a thing because seeing Key’s face would’ve probably just made him feel even worst. Jinki carefully lowered himself and sat next to Key so that their sides were touching.
“That door is not air-thigh we will not suffocate”, Jinki muttered softly as he sneaked his arm around Key’s shoulders, hoping that the other would find it comforting instead of infuriating.
“Are you sure?” Key’s voice was wavering.
“I wouldn’t lie to you”, Jinki told him and started running his hand up and down Key’s arm. “Now let’s talk about something nice to pass the time”.
“Like clothes?” Key suggested and Jinki could hear the smile in his voice.
“If you want to”, Jinki laughed. “You could tell me what you bought yesterday when you were shopping with Jonghyun”.
“Oh, you need to see the new shirt I bought! It’s black and it reads “never kiss and tell” and-“ Key’s speech came to a halt and his breathing started speeding up again.
“I never even got my first kiss! Oh my god I never even kissed anyone and I’m going to die as a virgin this is so embarrassing.” Key started babbling. “And I wanted to have children too, and I was supposed to learn that new SNSD’s dance”.
It took Jinki a lot not to laugh. Only Key could worry about something like that in a situation like this.
“Hush now, Kibummie”, Jinki spoke softly and traced his jaw with his index finger. “You will have time to do all of those. I’ll make sure you leave here alive”.
Suddenly Key was grasping the front of Jinki’s shirt and his face was so impossibly close. When Key spoke it was right into Jinki’s ear and it send shivers down his body.
“You need to be alive too”, Key told him with his best no arguments tone. It was surprisingly effective even when he sounded like he would faint soon. “If you die I can’t have kids with you and who am I supposed to marry then?”
“Are you planning to marry me?” Jinki asked half amused half confused.
“You just need to propose to me first”, Key told him and he was pressing closer and damn it made Jinki feel all hot. “And do it properly I will kill you if it’s no romantic, after all the hours I’ve spent dreaming about it”.
Jinki thought that even for someone in middle of a panic attack Key made absolutely no sense. Though he would be perfectly happy to pretend that Key actually wanted to marry him instead of hating his guts.
“We will talk more about this getting married thing once we get out of here”, Jinki promised Key and tried to get some space between them. It was made difficult by Key’s strong hands pulling him by the collar of his shirt.
“Can you just kiss me now?” Key pleaded and if Jinki hadn’t been sitting he would’ve probably fell over in shock.
“You want, you want me to kiss you?” Jinki stuttered and felt his cheeks burn. Key couldn’t possibly be serious.
“Yes”.
There was no hesitation. Key was clearly just in a very weird state and Jinki couldn’t take advance of that. Right? He was pretty sure that if Key didn’t back off soon he would throw away all the morals and just abuse his pretty little mouth right there and then.
“Key you don’t really want me to kiss you”, Jinki told him firmly, trying to be the good leader he was. “You don’t even like me”.
Key’s grasp on his shirt loosened and he could feel the other boy back off a bit.
“Of course I like you, otherwise I wouldn’t want to marry you”, Key spoke to him like he was the one making no sense.
“Well, some time ago you listed several things you can’t stand about me and seemingly you can’t even look at me shirtless and”, Jinki started but was cut off by Key pressing his palm against Jinki’s mouth. It took Jinki by surprise and he let out a muffled squeal.
“I thought it was quite obvious I didn’t mean it”, Key sighed. “I love taking care of you, you should know that by now. You have the most beautiful voice I’ve ever heard and even if your jokes really are lame they’re just so adorable. You’re adorable, hyung”.
It was silent for a moment before Key continued and he sounded too calm and composed for a claustrophobic trapped in a dark closet.
“I only asked you to put on some clothes because I was afraid I might pin you to the floor and ravish you if you walked around like that”, Key told him, his serious voice a contrast to his words. “I know I’ve been awful to you lately but it’s just easier that way. I can’t act to be only friends with you when I want so much more”.
Jinki was blinking furiously and it was a good thing Key’s warm hand was still covering his mouth because Jinki had no idea what to say. A small voice in his head was shouting that this was good and he should do something but the rest of his brain refused to understand what was going on.
Key removed his hand and when he spoke again he sounded scared.
“I love you”.
It was silent then. Their breathing sounded deafeningly loud in the silence. Jinki could hear his heart beat fast, every thump making him feel dizzier than before. Jinki knew he should say something but he didn’t seem to be able to form a sentence. Then Key sobbed snapping Jinki out of his daze.
“Kibum, do you really mean what you just said?” Jinki whispered. He was afraid that it was all a dream and soon he would wake up alone in his bed.
“I do”, Key whispered back. His voice was strained and Jinki could feel him shivering where their bodies met. “I never planned to tell you but I had to because if we won’t survive from here I just wanted you to know I don’t hate you and maybe you hate me but I-“
Jinki interrupted Key by pressing a kiss on the corner of his mouth. He had aimed for his lips but it was too dark to see anything so that was close enough by Jinki’s standards. It also had the desired effect as Key immediately froze and stopped in middle of a sentence. Jinki brought his hand to cup Key’s face and let his fingers brush against Key’s cheek.
“I love you too”, Jinki muttered and Key exhaled sharply. “Always have”.
Then Key was pressing their mouths together and all Jinki could smell was Key’s cologne and all Jinki could feel was Key’s lips against his own. Key kissed him like his life depended on it and Jinki was more than willing to let him. It was hasty and wet and nothing like Jinki had thought his first kiss would be but damn if it wasn’t the best thing he had experienced.
They broke apart when they heard sounds from the hallway signaling that the three others were back. In a flash Key had climbed over Jinki and started hitting the door with his fists while shouting “Let me out of here!” from the top of his lungs.
The door opened and Jonghyun’s face peeked in. He was about to ask something but never got the change to form a sentence before Key was on his feet and rushed past Jonghyun, almost knocking him over in his hurry to get out.
“I hate you Lee Jinki!” Key shouted as he stormed somewhere in the direction of the kitchen.
“He’s just upset, he doesn’t really hate you”, Minho was quick to offer. Jinki just smiled so widely it hurt.
“I know”, Jinki told them happily. “He loves me. Key loves me back.”
Jonghyun and Minho shared a confused look. Jinki joined them when Taemin threw his hand up in the air as in surrender and let out the deepest sigh they had ever heard.
“It was about a time”, Taemin muttered and left his hyungs to stare at his back.
