Somewhere in the solar system, Jacob stared back at his home planet.
“This is an interesting predicament,” he pondered. “I really need to get back home.”
For the twelfth time, he went down the handwritten “Emergency Return To Earth Suggestions” list posted next to the ship’s control panel.
“Find a black hole - but not BLACK black. More like a really really dark gray.” Been there, done that. Jacob had found several dark grey holes, but none were really dark gray let alone really really dark gray.
“Turn on the planet magnet and let the earth come to you.” Jacob wasn’t going to try that again. The good aliens of Venus wouldn’t forgive him twice.
“Make a wish upon the first star of the night.” Oh, Jacob tried and tried, but eventually came to the realization that it would take forever to figure out which one of the billions of stars was the first. He believed he narrowed it down to a half dozen, but he knew the math was still against him so he stopped trying.
“Mold mashed potatoes into something important, you know, have it MEAN something.” Jacob glanced at the mashed potato sculptures of a kitten, He-Man, and Drew Carey on the table beside him, peeked at the empty boxes of instant mashed potatoes, and sighed.
“Scream for help.” This was preposterous. He didn’t want to wake up the captain.
As he about to dismiss the list one more time, Jacob’s eye caught the “Set DVR” Post-It located at the bottom of the list. “Crap, I forgot to do that,” he commented. He then noticed writing just outside the edge of the yellow square. He lifted off the Post-It and discovered one final suggestion on the list:
“Press the ‘Return To Earth’ button located beneath the ‘Eject’ button”
“Well this should be easy!” Jacob exclaimed as he saw the “Return To Earth” label. But he frowned upon realizing that he was about to be subjected to the same predicament he had been dealing with the whole journey. Does the label refer to the button above the label or the button below it?
“Should I risk it?” he wondered as his finger hovered over what he believed was the button that would send him home. “Of course I should risk it… Who’s going to feed my parakeet?”
As Jacob floated further and further away from the ship, he carefully pulled out his “Things To Do When Trapped In Space Away From Your Ship” checklist. “Oh man!,” he shouted. “I forgot to set my DVR!”
