so, here I am on a Wednesday night, watching the Olympics, eating carrots & drinking green tea, and researching abortion.
BIG DOWNER.
I am not even reading the propaganda sites, thus far just Wikipedia. When I think of abortion, 2 things automatically come to mind. First, my senior year in college, in one of my sociology classes, we read a couple reports by women who had abortions (i forget exactly why we were reading these). Anyway, it went over the various methods. Surgery has always kind or raised a red flag in my mind. Just the numbing & inserting and needles and chemicals and all, seems it's something that should be avoided. Then there are the herbal abortions. Something to keep in mind: a woman's body will try at ALL COSTS to keep the fetus alive. Many herbal abortion methods can have devastating side effects to the mothers, and may not even kill the child, but rather damage it.
Secondly, I know personally of several women who have had abortions. I can think of at least two who expressed to me the massive amount of pain they experienced, even during a surgical abortion (the other girl took a pill that was prescribed to her, I don't know what that method is called). "No one told me it would hurt so much."
So, that being said, I still consider myself pro-choice. (shhh...). I am not "pro-abortion" so much as I realize there are many circumstances that the law cannot foresee. Further, have we not learned anything from history? Making abortion illegal just puts women in danger.
So, pro-choice. But, I am not a fan of abortion, I just see it as a fact of life (like prostitution and smoking pot, but I digress...).
I wish our society did more to help prevent abortion. SEX ED. AVAILABILITY OF CONTRACEPTION & THE MORNING AFTER PILL. etc etc. Abstinence surely works for some, and that's fantastic. However, an abstinence-only mentality, whether endorsed by schools or a government, simply ignores most of the problem.
OK, so, then women get pregnant without intending to. SHIT HAPPENS. As an aside, one of my good friends recently gave birth out of wedlock (i think i wrote about this somewhere else). Collegiate athlete, business major (i think), works for the girl scouts, regular church-goer. When I told my family, my dad barely looked up from the newspaper and said, "well, it's happened before, it'll happen again." My sister, who at that point had just had Katherine, fought back tears as she expressed how happy she was. This girl's mom is helping out a lot, and she is surrounded by loving friends and family.
Obviously, not everyone is so lucky. She at least was fortunate to have already graduated from college and had worked somewhere for a few years.
So, what should we, as a society, do to try to prevent abortions from happening? Let's support mothers, shall we? Help them get health insurance, make sure that they can earn a living wage. Let's support the foster-care system. Hey, let's not think that adoption is only for those poor saps that can't procreate themselves...
Ok, and let's say a women has had an abortion. Alright. We dont know her situation; what factors led her to that decision.
I remember once hearing a priest talk to a group of 14-yr olds about abortion. Yes, the Church is pro-life. However, all we can do is try to prevent abortion. Once a woman has had an abortion, all we can do is support her in anything she needs. She does not need to be preached to, but rather, cared for as Christ cares for all, sinners and saints alike.
ok, ok. i know not everyone will agree with me, but there it is. my opinion.
